Hey folks,

I'm going to be visiting the state of NY for the first time in May. I'll be going to the NASCAR race weekend down in Watkins Glen. Does anyone have a .hpd file they're willing to share with just the normal police, fire, ems stuff. I'd like to have my programming prepared in advance. Enough to listen to for a weekend visiting. I have a 436HP.

What's all good to listen to say in a 30 mile radius?

Also, how does one get NASCAR frequencies for the weekend for all the series attending? I believe it's the Cup Series, Truck Series, and the ARCA series.

Is traveling with a scanner while mobile (even as a passenger) still a forbidden thing?

Thanks, from a Canadian race and scanning fan. :)

Without getting into a useless discussion of the legalities of a scanner in a motor vehicle in NY, the practical advice is be discreet and don't do anything to attract the attention of the police and there will be no problem.

Good luck on hearing much of any activity, that part of the finger lakes/southern tier is fairly quiet with police, fire and ems. You can literally go hours with out hearing activity in that area and even the neighboring counties. I am NOT saying it would be a waste of time though, just be prepared for a lot of quiet scanning.

I'll be at the race track all weekend long busy with race comms. I'm just looking to have something to listen to in the off hours. :)

Let me add that Schuyler county (where Watkins Glen is in) and Yates counties (which is right next to Schuyler county) those two are one of the quietist counties in that area. You will have more activity listening to Steuben and Chemung counties. Tompkins County you can only hear fire and ems now since police are no longer monitorable.

Bring several antenna options. The noise floor at the track is ridiculous. If monitoring during the race a smaller antenna may help. There are so many broadcast transmitters and channels in use at the track it is difficult to monitor at times without overloading the receiver of non-commercial equipment.

The only other thing that comes to mind is NYSP 154.665 car to car (simplex) may be active with traffic control and enforcement in the area of the racetrack.

In the past, security at the track was off-duty officers from area agencies assisting Schuyler Sheriif. This was years ago and not sure how it is done now but LEOs I knew used to go every year. I am not aware of a dedicated frequency for security.
