I am going to be putting up a disc cone antenna. I have RG-6 now about 100 feet is that ok or should I get something else. A long time ago I use to run RG-58 but since it's a 2 floor house I would have loss with 58 correct . I would sure appreciate any help from you guy's.

You must remember the discone is not frequency specific. Discones usually have an SO-239 jack for the PL-259 plug. Dont wire coax to a PL-259. Put a PL to F adp in the SO-239 and an "F" connector on RG-6. Less chance of tooooo much loss. Should work OK.

If you've got the -6, use it. And, yes, you'd have more loss with -58 (especially if it's along the lines of cable TV coax).

Then you've got to look at terminating. (The higher the antenna the better, in general. The shortest as possible cable run the better.) A majority of discones, and other antennas, are going to be N-female. So... you may want to keep it easy on yourself and get an N-female to F-female adapter. (Let me know if you have any hard time locating such, I've done it a number of times.) A BNC-male to F-male adapter for the radio/scanner end. Then terminate your RG with F-male connectors. I'm guessing, thinking, hoping, wondering if you have a stripper and crimper (the compression fittings are great since they keep moisture out). <-- All that is an in general 'easy' route.

Read through the wiki some, get input from others, make the best or most informed decision that you can. Ask questions. And have fun with it.

Hi, Larry

-239 connectors on omnis, are those, like maybe, Radio Shack, or other(s)?

The reason I ask is that other than such as the Scantennas and a such, most yagis, corner reflectors, bad specific fiberglass omnis that I see are N connectors. I know there's a mix of the two, -239s and Ns, but it just may be the sources that I look at that has me seeing more N than -239.

Thanks,
-Doug

Less loss with an F connector and an F-to-259 adapter than with a single PL-259 connector?

You've done it again, Larry - kept your record for being wrong intact.
