If you've got the -6, use it. And, yes, you'd have more loss with -58 (especially if it's along the lines of cable TV coax).
Then you've got to look at terminating. (The higher the antenna the better, in general. The shortest as possible cable run the better.) A majority of discones, and other antennas, are going to be N-female. So... you may want to keep it easy on yourself and get an N-female to F-female adapter. (Let me know if you have any hard time locating such, I've done it a number of times.) A BNC-male to F-male adapter for the radio/scanner end. Then terminate your RG with F-male connectors. I'm guessing, thinking, hoping, wondering if you have a stripper and crimper (the compression fittings are great since they keep moisture out). <-- All that is an in general 'easy' route.
Read through the wiki some, get input from others, make the best or most informed decision that you can. Ask questions. And have fun with it.
