I see there are some other feeds on scanamerica that are just starting up. There is Cedar Rapids feed, but it currently just streaming the NWS and also a feed for central Iowa (Polk, Boone, Story, Dallas, and Guthrie counties) that isn't currently on the air yet.

Hopefully we can add more counties, but I am happy to see the rapid growth in Iowa just in the past week.

If anyone is interested in setting up a feed, all they need is a scanner and a dedicated internet line, like cable or DSL. The steps to set it up are really simple.

i am thinking of getting a cheaper scanner so i can set it up and do dallas county. I always like to know what's going on with the fire channel since my minitor 4 doesn't pickup well outside of the county. I would love to set one up at our fire station on our ham radio which can pickup counties far far away. We have a nice antenna tower with several nice antenna's for our ham radio and county radio's.. I also would like to plan on getting a nicer antenna on the house but that's not in the cards right away

Cedar Rapids should be up and running trying to get all the good talk groups dialed in. I may put a scanner at my cube at work and stream Iowa City, but that could maybe get me in trouble (bandwidth nazis around there) so we'll see.

Playing devil's advocate here... is "more" really better? For instance, the Polk County feed on scanamerica also includes Boone, Dallas, Guthrie, and Story counties. Having so many different agencies on one single stream would make it a little bit more difficult to follow conversations, no? As in there may be something big going on in Des Moines but we have a lesser chance of hearing about it because there are so many other agencies also talking on the feed.

Maybe it's just me, but it's hard to follow which agency is speaking and there's a lot of chitchat from Boone and Guthrie that doesn't seem necessary and it just further jams up the stream. This is just my humble opinion, anyways. That's why on my stream it is specifically Des Moines Police & Fire only, and when I expand there will be streams for Westcom, Polk County SO & Fire, Story County and so on.

So I guess I'm just wondering... is "more" really better? Just seems like there's so many things going on that it's hard to follow through all the chitchat.

I actually agree with that. The feed for dallas county has racom on there that has that horrible beep everytime someone is done keying up the mic. My intention is to get a cheapo scanner with a decent VHF antenna to setup for dallas county so i can get all the channels(Including Pub Safety) Broadcasted. I will be looking around right now since the xmas deals are on. I also am planning on installing a roof mount antenna so that i can get better reception on the VHF/UHF side so i can hear the county better in that aspect.

I separated my feeds out into two different feeds.
The first feed is for Fayette, Buchanan, and Bremer Counties, and ISP for that area
These counties don't have much traffic, so following stuff is pretty easy
The second feed is the Waterloo RACOM system and Oelwein RACOM system
Right now it is in talkgroup search mode so all talkgroups are heard. If it gets to be too much, I may start limiting what talkgroups are on this feed.

If anyone else listens to these feeds, let me know how to volume sounds, and if you have any suggestions.

I would agree that more isn't better. I'm also looking at seperating my giant list into two seperate feeds (once I get the other scanner here). However, even for now, my area is so rural for the most part, there's still not a whole lot of traffic. Even though I cover 4 different counties, the State Patrol still takes up most of the air time. I think what I'm going to do is seperate the counties into one feed, and ISP into another feed. I currently cover 5 different ISP towers so I get lots of traffic on them.

Ben,

Another option for you would be to get a scanner with PL and only put the towers that are really close to your area.

At least all of this streaming has made the forum active again.

It sounds good. So far the volume is good and there isn't too much traffic on it. Thank you for putting Jones County up. I will enjoy listening to it now and then since that is where I grew up.

Also, as advised by EGRAMS, I will be heading to Radio Shack to purchase the line in splitter, so that I can seperate the two feeds..1 being Iowa City TRS and Johnson Co, and 2 being Washington Co, Iowa Co, Muscatine Co, Cedar Co. That way there isn't too much traffic per line.

Any other counties, or frequencies needed let me know.

Matt,

I'd be glad for you to have Muscatine County on your lineup. I tried running it and I was only able to keep it up for a day or two. So go get em'.

I am now broadcasting a Dallas County and Westcom Feed for anyone who wants to listen in. It is not listed in the polk county section though. It's the other one that is listed in the dallas county section. If you look back in the archives on the site you might be able to catch traffic on whatever Fire Ops channel urbandale was on for that big 1mil house fire
