I would recommend the Pro-106, you can listen to digital and analog on it.
IMO the Saskatoon system is due for an upgrade and that might mean digital in the next few years here.
I love my Pro-106, and I think you would too.

Uniden. Uniden. Uniden. Uniden scanners with their dynamic memory system are much better for trunking the entire PPSTN. If you ever take a roadtrip through Saskatchewan, you're going to want a Uniden. Just FYI.

GRE GRE GRE GRE .. if you want object oriented memory management you are going to want a GRE.

I have a PSR 500 and it works flawlessly.

Based on the comments I've read on RR, I went with a Uniden 396XT. However, I really like the GRE PSR-800 and I think once they get Industry Canada certification I will be ordering one.

Yes I would reccomend the BC 396XT. The GRE PSR-800 sounds good with the large easy to read screen and it sounds more user friendly to add addition stuff as compared to the Home Patrol. VKtoo uses a PSR 800 to monitor the large NSW P25 system down under in Aussie and enjoys it. His main interest is fire.

I have a GRE PSR-500 and it also works quite well with the P25 Provincial system, I do want to get the Uniden as it will hold all of the frequencies in one "bank" so if you're out and about you wont' miss anything, One day when I get one, then I can give a truly bias critique of them both haha.

I purchased the PSR-600 and used it on the PPSTN for about a week. I then sold it immediately and purchased a Uniden. Best decision I ever made.

The Uniden's work the absolute best for the size, magnitude and capabilities of the PPSTN. This is all coming from a guy who has been monitoring on the ground, continuously, for quite some time.

I am also in Saskatoon and was wanting to scan Saskatoon fire and ambulance. I used to use a PRO 96 to scan police but since they went to encrypted I got rid of it. I know for fire you do not need digital. What version of Radio shack scanner would I need to scan analog Saskatoon Fire? Any advice would be great.
Thanks

As long as you can 800 Mhz Trunk track you are good to go. I listened to them last week and as usual they are very busy code Green picking up 'sharps.' At least we can still hear them.

I'm programming in a bunch of Provincial fire frequencies in my scanner for the weekend. I'm sure with the dry conditions and winds I might hear some excitement.

BTW if you are in Saskatoon next weekend I have a book signing. PM me for more details.

boom38,

Read back to Colby's comments on scanners, he know's his stuff!! I have a GRE PSR 500, and it works quite well as well. I will agree with Colby, that it seems that the Uniden sounds like the better choice for a few reasons, but until I have both I can't declare a clear winner just yet...

Hey there colby, i used to have a few scanners, but not for the last few years and am looking at getting a new handheld. I see there is discussion between a few makers, but not too sure what route to go. Is there a dealer in regina? or where would you suggest aquiring one as well.

I have been running a GRE PSR 500 for almost 4 years in South East Saskatchewan and have no complaints about it's ability to decode the PPSTN in the area. I purchased a Uniden BCD 396XT over a year ago and am very happy with it's performance also. Side by side both have performed comparable decoding the Network. Side by Side the Uniden is smaller and more compact. Something to keep in mind if you enjoy travelling with your scanner. Happy with both and both are used daily. One in my vehicle and one at home.

I for some reason can hear the RCMP but I don't hear much else on the PP system. When I was in Saskatoon I could hear EMS but outside of Saskatoon I don't hear anything but RCMP.

Yes .. the PSR500 is one of the best scanners around. It would be an excellent choice for your monitoring in Saskatchewan.

Well I have had both. I got the Pro-106 first, and a month after I got fed up with it, and sold it. Got myself a 396XT instead. It is a much better radio for the size.

The 106 is a freaking brick, and under my shirt it looks like I'm wearing a colostomy bag!

The only 1 custom search range really ticked me off, and the inter mod was so severe that I operated it mostly with the global attenuator on.

The radio never came with a programming cable, I had to spend a pretty penny for the cable and software. The 396 came with a cable, and I use freescan with it. Pretty impressive program for free!

On the City of Regina, and PPSTN, like to organize agencies to their own number, so I can shut them off and turn them on when needed. With only 20 available per V-folder on the 106, I found myself combining agencies together to make things fit.

I just love the number tag option on the 396, getting to a specific talk group on the uniden was much faster.

The audio quality I found to be the same.

I could go on and on, but uniden wins hands down IMHO!

Regards,
Richster.

Would anyone be able to send me a latest file for PSR500 for the ppstn system, I have been away for a while and am crazy busy so don't have a lot of time to update my scanner.
Would greatly appreciate it!

Advice for Saskatoon and area

Firstly, I am replying to this thread because I can't figure out how to post a new thread. The FAQ's tell me to click on the non-existant "new thread" button. This is the first thing I need help with. Secondly, my scanner is a Grecom PSR310 and I am scanning the City of Saskatoon's trunked system where I occasionally get some Fire comms but 99% is the darned bus drivers. Is there any way I can eliminate the bus comms?

Thanks for any help
