As for those that are intend on sticking with XP, what re you going to do when updates cease?

I only upgrade OS's when a software application I want or need requires it. I have software that requires DOS, and Microsoft's lack of support has been a non-issue. I have a copy of XP Pro that doesn't need key registration, so I use that when appropriate. If Win 7 turns out the be the disaster that Vista has been, my next OS will be to Linux, and windows applications will run through emulator software. This is MS's last chance, so far as I'm concerned.

I've been using Windows 7 since the first public beta and have since purchased a TechNet subscription so I had the release version at the same time as the OEMs got it (about two months ago). I can't say anything bad about it. Best Windows ever. I still have some minor complaints, but it's a great step forward over all. This is coming from a staunchly cross-platform user who runs both Linux and Windows servers, Linux and BSD routers, and uses XP, 7, OS X 10.6, and Linux as desktop OSes every day. I still wish Windows had a shell worth anything (no, Powershell is ok, but it's not bash), but other than that I have no complaints using Windows 7 every day.

Internet gamer was telling me he wants Win7 because it runs better on older computers. What is he smoking!? I have a 300 MHZ | 256MB RAM | 5Gbyte hard drive laptop that I use for PDW and xcorder using XP! Works flawless. IN fact I have it record all data to a USB stick so that the hard drive spins down. Eventually I suppose the USB stick will go south. Better than the hard drive.

Windows 7 system requirements - Microsoft Windows

Anyone else here that win 7 works better on older computers? Maybe by old they mean by four years and not ten!?

It runs better on anything it'll run on IF all your performance-critical devices have drivers that conform to the new driver models. Chipset, disk controller, and GPU being the most important three. This is a side benefit of being optimized for netbooks, since many of them use hardware with performance similar to that of desktop machines from the early '00s. An Intel Atom is roughly on par with Pentium IIIs of similar clock speeds, so with netbooks and other portables on the market using 800MHz or lower Atoms, Windows 7 had to be able to provide usable performance on this hardware.

I upgraded a factory Vista machine and so far it has been a super easy and smooth process. My impression is that it seems to run like an uncluttered XP install with the graphics and layout changes of Vista. It was nice not have have to run two different PCs for XP only programs too. I tried several Motorola CPS applications such as Astro Saber / XTS, Astro Spectra and Astro25 and they all installed and ran perfectly. At this point I am about as happy as I can be with it. It seems to boot quickly, shut down quickly and it manages storage devices better. I had a hell of a time with Vista and large external hard drives causing Vista to lock up when they were plugged in but none of this has been a problem with 7.

Okay, that's all fine and well but the specs say 1GB minimum. I can't imagine win 7 on a 300 MHZ | 256MB RAM computer.

I don't think they mean 10 years old. I did install Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on a older GW 4300 with 3GB RAM, a new ATi HD video card (don't remember model) and 5.1 surround sound USB device. It makes a pretty nice media center PC. I can stream full Blu-Ray DVD rips from the server.

I pulled Windows 7 Ultimate off my machine, and reinstalled XP. Although this time I installed 64 bit Windows XP. To me, and this is just my personal opinion, Windows 7 was just like Vista, only a little more behaved. Nothing really new and innovative, nothing I couldn't live without, and nothing I wanted to spend $200 on.

To be fair, it installed well, and worked well, no problems.

Sticking with my Vista for a while.
What is SO different with 7??
There isnt one thing I cant do with Vista.

You are correct. When the next service pack comes out for Vista, you will essentially have Windows 7, for free.

Remember those stupid Microsoft commercials about their new operating system called Mojave? It was Vista, they just called it Mojave, and all of the sudden all the Microsoft sheeple thought it was wonderful!

Microsoft experiments with a new name for Vista | The Industry Standard

So based on that success, some brilliant marketing person said, well Hell, lets do it again, only this time we'll call it Windows 7. Rename it and they will buy!

It seems you completely missed the purpose and outcome of the Mojave Experiment.

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate this week and so far I am impressed. No issues and my entire scanner related software works like a champ. I still have my WinXP system in case of emergencies but once I finish transferring all my files over, Win 7 will be my primary PC and the XP machine will move down as a spare or to one of my kids.
