yesterday i hauled a truck load wheat to the carthage,mo flour mill. long line so i get my hand held out.
over 10 good strong repeaters the hand held can hold on to. i gave my callsign asking cq. dead quiet . used t be operators on the repeaters lots. sad nobody uses them anymore.
i tried 70 cm and 2 meters n so quiet you could hear paint drying.
local clubs passed several new members with tech license. and not all work days.
It's the scourge of HF. Too many OMs talking about the weather on their 80 meter nets. I was under the impression that we were supposed to have a 'USE IT OR LOSE IT" attitude.

what i feel also. but if you do find somebody to talk to,out of nowhere you get grumpy fart saying lets not tie this busy machine up or cut it short in case of emergencys. on wires x a room has rag chew encouraged but ol grumpy ham comes on with that bs.
way it stands i wasted my money .the idea to just set n stare at radio waiting for somebody to talk so they can run em off.no wonder many get license then quit. sorry to those i might upset but yes you do it all the time like YOU OWN IT

I've been saying this for years! At Pacificon last year I spoke to reps from both Yaesu and Icom about the need for remote mount mobile radios. I explained the problem with sticking a radio the size of a text book under a "dash" that really doesn't have an "under" anymore. I told him we needed a box under the seat with a control head microphone.

Both of these old guys told me there was no market for a radio like that! Seriously? They must both be driving Plymouth Dusters from the 60's!

My guess would have been a 1971 Chrysler New Yorker land yacht. :ROFLMAO:

Same thought, though ...

On the subject of mobiles with controls in the handset...

I picked up an Abbree AR-7600 from AliExpress for about $130. It's a 30 watt unit with all the controls in the handset. I haven't tested it yet because apparently there's no programming software available (Whoopsie! I didn't think of that before I bought it.) and I haven't had the time and inclination to program a bunch of frequencies from the keypad. I'll be interested to see how it works. The Anysecu WP-9900 in the truck works okay for most of what I want to do with it, but the characters on the screen are really small and it's not at all convenient to adjust the volume. My truck can get pretty loud depending upon what I'm doing at the moment, and I want an easy volume control.

Nice! That's a good looking radio! Now if Yaesu, Kenwood and Icom would make something similar that would be smoking! But, I suspect they will continue to make the same old 1970's style bricks that won't fit anywhere and just add more features...like a new digital mode that no one wants.

I've never had any issue with finding a place to mount a radio in my truck. With the exception of the very first mobile I put in it, every one since has been one with a separate control head. The body has gone under the driver's seat and the control head has been mounted on the dash. Only one has had the microphone connected to the radio body and that issue was solved with an extension cable. I've used quick release brackets for the control head that allow me to put the head away for security purposes.

In my area, there’s little activity on 75/80 meters. It’s even noticeable
on ten meters once crowded with new hams. Where are they ? I see
oodles of activity on my band scope and it’s all on FT8..
Look at all the spots on the internet dx sites and 90% of them are
all Ft8 operations. For the old timer who chased DX for years on phone and CW,, there is
little activity remaining. In the past six months, there have been a slew of DX’pediitions
and many were FT4/FT8 only. The face of our hobby has charged drastically and as more
technology changes emerge, who knows where the action will shift to?

Traffic nets are usually a good place to find 75/80 meter activity. You may not have traffic for the net, but you can check in and get to know the regulars.
