This radio is based on the original GRE PSR 600. The PSR500 (which I own) is the handlheld version of the same radio. These are great radios and the only limitations I know of are:

- no onboard library (manual programming and/or purchase separate software like Win500)
- does not do P25 Phase 2 (but does do Phase 1)

Having said that - these radios do provide a few other additional features that were not carried over into other radios.

The only other thing that comes to mind is that everyone has different outcomes with just about any radio that is on the market when it comes to "digital simulcast" issues. However, that's a consideration regardless of what radio you might buy.

$285 is a pretty good price....

I have the WS-1065 here in Cerritos. It is an excellent scanner. Does P25 phase 1 LAPD sounds great on the scanner. Pretty good trunking of LA ICIS and OC CCCS. At that price, you should really consider it. I think you will be pleased. Software makes programming much easier. An excellent radio for So. Calif monitoring.

I just returned a Whistler 1095 Scanner. I didn't like the EZ programming or the scanner. Got lots of "errors" with lots of difficulty setting up program.

For the price the radio is a great deal. Looks like you live in the Compton area. I have one of those WS1065 radios and love it in the SOCAL area too.

Now with Compton part of LASO and moving over to LA-RICS I would think about buying a Phase II scanner since LA-RICS is Phase II.

I did the same a few months ago. EZ Scan is anything but easy. I bought a PRO-652 and used the ARC500 free trial to set it up. Not easy, but MUCH easier than EZ Scan. Digital Phase I works beautifully.

Just add something I don't think has been mentioned: The GRE 600 (a close cousin) has the best speaker of any of my scanners, and it is built like a tank. For ten years I left it outside in the carport to listen while doing "shop" stuff. At 3/4 volumn, I could hear it easily across the street at a neighbors.

. +1 on this. The best P25 audio too, for a scanner :). 73, n9zas

I'll bet all the other neighbors were thrilled !

Nearly all are day workers, so I have no daytime data. However, whenever I am out in the driveway after dark with my telescope/s, they congregate readily. With the scanner running quietly in the background, the comments range from "I didn't know you could do that." to "That's pretty interesting, can you turn it up a little?"

There is no comparision between Whistler and GRE,doing some tests between original GRE and new Whistler 1065,same antenna and connectors for both, scanning the same band for the same amount of time. The Whistler failed on every level,Scanning aircraft band 118.05-136.00,Gre Found 45 Channels including all the local channels, while Whistler barely got 8 and most of them were high altitude channels and NO local channels.Unfortunately i am done with Whistler.Same thing on public safety search,GRE found 55 Channels while Whistler found 7.Absolutely worthless!!Anybody want a fairly new 1065 with all accessories and the box.

Same thing here, I am done with Whistler. Customer rep never got back to me even though he kept assuring me he would.

I used a Pro 652 for a couple of months, then sold it to my daughter in law's mother. Worked great, and had great sound. This is the same radio as the 1065, and is made by Whistler. I also have a 668, and 1095. Very satisfied with Whistler products. Can't say the same for my 536 tho. I am very disappointed in my 536. I would sell it, but it is the only radio I have that will fit in , hence the only reason I keep it. If I remember correctly, the 1065/652/600/197, had an in dash option
