Wow- can't wait to try these! Are they only available on the Whistler website or will they be available at our normal scanner shopping locations?

That Mobile/Desktop unit looks interesting but I can't afford it right now. Maybe Santa will bring me one.
Looking forward to reading reviews on it, especially how it performs in the 700MHz band.

Oh no! Not the "rubber duck discone" !

Wendy - c'mon. Seriously? That's not how they work. And a porcupine mess up top? I .... just ... cant .. believe it.

On a serious note, on the discone, is the coax routed through the base and direct connected to the antenna?

I ask as I currently use a Diamond D220R mobile discone for travel/hotel rooms and there's some loss with the UHF-NMO/mag mount/PL-BNC connections. I may buy one and try it out (lots of travel til January).

You can save a lot of money just by getting a VHF UHF 800 ground plane and mounting it on a long broom handle. As long as you use a little bit of low loss coax you're in business.

You can even get fancy and attach it to a floor lamp or a hat rack. A cheap tripod would work too.

I had to chuckle on that mobile mag mount antenna - the ad says 'dual band' but the description says '25 Mhz - 1.8 Ghz'

Uh huh- Low band and that small? Sorry not likely to happen. And using 174u cable - at 800 Mhz it will be about as good as a wet noodle. Probably not that good at UHF, either.

The ad...well Whistler ought to be embarrassed about making such a dumb mistake

Mike.

There shouldn't be any, unless your monitoring above 900MHz possibly. How did you determine there was any loss?

I have one that looks very similar marketed as a dual band and it works surprisingly well at a much wider range of frequencies than I had expected. Maybe that is the case here as well?

There seems to be a lot of comments in this thread with what appear to be opinions on a product they have not tested.

I learned a long time ago to test something before I comment as I have been pleasantly surprised in the past with results from some products even when my first thought may have been somewhat skeptical at best.

The Diamond D220R is a respectable antenna that works well. I've used for monitoring VHF/UHF aircraft bands. If you're not happy with the performance you're getting with the D220R, don't buy the quagmire antennas from Whistler.
