I grabbed one of my 3 TRX-1 scanners for a trip. I have an 800-870 bnc antenna for it, but it was not picking up the state system that usually shows (T) when its decoding the control channel. It's a 774mhz P2 TDMA system. On a P25P1 system the radio scans through the control channels and when one has traffic stops and shows the (T), otherwise you see S (Squelch) flashing past control channels.
I edit system and lock out sites that are out of range, and unlock sites that will or are in range. That speeds detection of voice traffic.
During the trip I had a BCD-396t and the TRX-1 and the BCD was picking up Sara(Iowa) across 3 counties and the TRX maybe a couple of transmissions the whole trip. I pulled it and tested with an HP8640 signal genarator.
33.4 Mhz -70 dbm. 154.4 Mhz -80 dBm. 464.0 Mhz -85 dbm. Yep it was pretty sick. Before, I tried to resolder the center pin from the antenna BNC through the sides of a cover thats over the RF jumper, but that just does not hold very long.
I know the center wire is a solid copper wire and it either breaks the solder on the pin or in this case it was broken apart half way up.
I desoldered the end on the center pin and it can be seen to be cracked all the way through. The only wire that can take some flexing without cracking would be stranded wire, so I removed the solid wire and used a piece of solder removal braid. That is difficult to break compared to a solid .025" wire. So I removed the cover from over the connector and pulled out the solid wire parts, tinned the ends of a 1/3" lenght of soldering braid, and installed that, re-soldered down the cover, and tested the radio. It's back to -116dbm on all bands again.

How hard is it to remove the cover to gain access to the bottom of the antenna connector?

Easy for me but I've been soldering for decades.
It took me about 10 minutes to work the cover off. First lift up the tang near the BNC. Now around each corner it can be pushed up with a small flat screwdrver or tweezers .
I pried up with tweezers and worked each of the 6 solder joints upwards. I used hot air to remove some epoxy over the lower left corner of the cover to expose the solder. Using a 1/4" wide tip and metcal soldering iron and some solder wick to clean up the pads after lifting the cover. Clean up the broken wire and solder pad and install a braid in its place.
Tin just the ends of the braid enough to get it to solder down.
Touch up the solder to allow flat cover landing. Minor re-design of a 'problem area'.
