Burbank and Glendale PD both had 2 helicopters, but have merged their air operations and retain 3 in total (selling 1) and reduced availability by 30%. (Instead of patrolling continuously during a shift, they will be available at the hangar at Bob Hope Airport)

More Los Angeles County law enforcement aircraft

Also in Los Angeles County are helicopters "Air 44, Air 45, and Air 77," operated jointly by El Monte, Baldwin Park, Montebello, Irwindale, West Covina, Azusa and the Baldwin Park Unified School District Police Departments. I think El Monte own them, not sure of that

Pasadena PD has had an air support section for at least 30 years, now consisting of
- two Enstrom F28F’s
- one Bell 206 BIII, and
- two Bell OH-58 Kiowa Warriors

Hawthorne PD just recently put their "Air 55" back up, after it had been grounded for a couple years due to budget cuts.

Long Beach PD has two Eurocopter EC130 B4s, "Fox 1" and "Fox 2"

All these agencies, as well as the media people, typically frequent 123.025 to assist each other, pass along incident info around, and keep from running into one another.

Oh, LASD has a fleet too, but I don't have their information handy.

Others we're forgetting?

San Diego County has many LE and FD Helos.

1. County Sheriff ASTREA has 6 or 7 Units for Law Enforcement.
2. San Diego City PD ABLE Units, two, I believe.
3. San Diego City Fire also contracts out for 2 Units.
4. The Border Patrol has 2 FOX Units.
5. During large wildfires, we will also now have Navy/Marine Corp support with Air Units.

Whatever happend to aircraft enforcement? I used to hear alot going on 45.02 and now don't hear anything? I have also tried 45.06 and 42.34

They are still using 45.06 as far as I know. Last time I monitored the aircraft was about 2 weeks ago. The plane was a fixed wing and I suspect it was down south on the I-5/SR-152/SR-33 Los Banos Corridor.

San Diego City owns 1 helo. They have just purchased another.

San Diego County has Copter 1 and 2, they are a joint effort between CDF and the SD sheriff. Other CDF copters wil cover when needed.

Is it possible that they lowered the transmission so the signals won't travel as far so others at a distance can't monitor them?

LAPD, for instance, has such a huge populated area (about 1½ times as large as New York City) and about half as many officers per 1000 people, so they've used helicopters for regular patrol since the late 1960s, actually since the mid 50s for traffic.

Hmm, a b/w airship, the brand new Air 13

And LAPD's first helicopter - still flying 52 years later

This Hiller 12-C, N5315V, was purchased by LAPD in 1956 for $38,770 and its first "patrol" flight was on April 17, 1956. As their primary mission was freeway traffic patrol, crews were from Traffic Enforcement Division, with the first pilots being two motor officers, Bob Van Aken (still alive at 86) and Don Miles, who had both been USMC pilots in Korea.

Since this a scanner forum, an anecdote I received from Van Aken a couple years ago:

Interesting sidelight might be radio in the first police helicopter back in 1956. It was actually a police motorcycle transmitter & receiver that sometimes worked & sometimes didn't. An interesting experience on one occasion when, from the air, we saw a suspect crawl under a house with several police ground units looking for him. I triggered the mic to give his location. Nothing. Thinking the situation could be
dangerous if the suspect was armed, desperate measures were called for. I landed in a nearby baseball diamond and ran for a pay phone. You can imagine the dispatchers surprise when I answered, "This is Air One on a pay phone." Thinking it was a crank call, it was a chore convincing her of the authenticity of the call. Our message was finally relayed and the suspect apprehended."
Bob VanAken #4772 (hel. pilot #1)

LASD has a large fleet of aircraft. The patrol birds are Eurocopters, the rescue birds are Sikorsky Sea Kings. The rescue bird can be heard both on LASD and LACOFD frequencies as Air 5. Any bird with a call sign Air 1 has the sheriff on board. Air 69 and Air 29 are north county birds flying out of the Antelope VAlley and Santa Clarita VAlley
