Wildcard Freq.
When you receive a wildcard freq on your scanner is that a legit freq in other words if I look it up on this site is that who was talking.

In other words lets say I get 1111 it shows a wild card on the scanner,
I look it up in the freq list on Radioreference.com and it says law on a police station 400 miles away is that possible?

The description of the question needs to be a bit more clear/specific.

If you are really talking about a frequency found during a search, that's not really a "wildcard".

I wildcard is more about a talkgroup on a trunk system....

How are you "searching" - limit search? service search? wildcard on a trunk system?

It sounds like you are scanning a trunk system using a wildcard and finding a talkgroup that is not listed for that system. Then, from there, you found that TGID on a completely different system that is 400 miles away.... doesn't work like that.

TGIDs are only valid within a given system.

You can have 100 systems with a TGID of 1111 and there is no relationship between them.

If you've got the most current data programmed into your scanner for the system your are monitoring, when you find a TGID on a trunk system using a wildcard (or ID Search for Uniden) and it isn't listed under the system you are monitoring, you'll have to listen to determine who the users of that TG are... There may be a "wiki" page for that system where others may be tracking "unknown talkgroups" to try to determine usage.

Seems a bit unusual (to me anyway) for that talkgroup to be heard on a site that far away but I wouldn't rule it out entirely.

If allowed by the system admins, a talkgroup on a large multi-site system could be heard from one end of the state to the other. That's the nature of these large systems since the sites are all connected in one way or another.

Chances are that someone in SLC has a radio on that is switched to that talkgroup.

Apparently, you've only loaded a subset of talkgroups for that system so you are likely to get many "false alarms" re: new / unknown talkgroups with a wildcard.

If using a wildcard, it is best to load ALL talkgroups if possible.

It is not unusual to hear comms from around the state while listening to the SLCo site. Many visitors come and set their radios to monitor what is happening "back home". One of the nice things about the system.
