No. The 3.5mm end should be a "stereo" connection. That cable may work with some software, I don't think it's the correct version for the '500. There's a few models that work, try 20-546.

The programming cable plugs into the PC/IF jack, not the headphone jack. It is a separate connector. I have 2 genuine Radio Shack 20-546 cables which work great with all of the GRE, Radio Shack, and Whistler scanners in that series (PSR-500, PSR-600, PRO-106, PRO-197, PRO-651, PRO-652, WS1040, WS1065).

I retract what I wrote earlier. I had to check what I am using, and it indeed 20-047 made/sold by Radio Shack. Before replying above, I searched for that model online and it showed me a mono plug. I knew the '500 needs the stereo plug. Hmm..

It makes me think someone has another cable and are labeling it with the same model number. Oh great. If you have a 20-047 with the stereo 3.5mm plug, it IS the correct model. The 20-546 also works. It's just a newer model.

This issue is bugging me. Going back over my steps, I searched for the 20-047 and this came up:
Note the text on the right at the end where it states 20-047.

It's clearly NOT the 20-047 for several reasons (brand, style, color, scanners it supports, .... So, if you are looking for such a cable, buyer beware. The correct cable is from Radio Shack (labeled as such), has a orange case (not black) and most importantly has a stereo 3.5mm connector.

Correct - As shown in that picture with the non-removeable mono connector on the scanner end of the cable, that is not a 20-047 (or equivalent) cable and will not work for the OP's PSR-500. It will only work with some of the older scanners that required a mono connection at the scanner. There are many other aftermarket cables equivalent to the 20-047 that work just fine - that have the stereo connector at the scanner end of the cable and the serial to USB convertor as part of the cable, and a stereo to mono removeable adaptor (for use with some of the older scanners that require it) such as:

Scroll down in that listing to the "Item description from the seller" heading to see the scanner models that it will work with, and which ones require the stereo or the mono connection.

You need to be careful and read the description. I saw one cable that programmed the scanner OK but the ad said it did not work for updating firmware. One of the members I was assisting purchased the cable and found out it did not work with firmware updates. He went back and reread the ad after purchasing the cable.

I have a Radioshack 20-047 cable (the orange body one) and used it this week to program a PSR-500 and a PRO-197 using ProScan. Worked perfectly. Crazy that people are selling them for $45-$50 on Ebay right now though
