Thanks. I have seen sone Uniden BC72XLT scanners going cheap on eBay and I didn't know if they would work here.

I found two different scanners that do pl tones. One has 5 step kHz and the other 7.5 step kHz at RCMP frequency range. Otherwise they are basically the same. Does this make a difference for Moncton?

Depending on how advance the scanner is, you can specify the step to each frequencies if the default step is not the right one. I do have the 72XLT scanner. Since that scanner is a basic/conventionnal scanner, it does not allow you to change the step. However, the 2 trunktracker scanners I own, allow me to change the step.

The default step for the 150MHz range is 5kHz. Hence the scanner with the 5kHz step would be your best bet. The difference between 5kHz and 7.5kHz for the 150MHz band is that with a 7.5kHz step, you would get some stattic on the RCMP frequencies (like when a radio is not exactly on the frequency but verry close to it).

Hope this helps.

Thank you, that is easy to understand. Choosing a scanner that will work here is more difficult than I thought! Especially an entry level one that has limited features. I will pick up the BC125AT or SC230 this week on eBay. Thanks for all the help.

My pleasure :). Please don't hesitate to send me a PM if you have more questions. I'll be glad to help! I've been in Moncton for a year but I've been scanning since 2006 in Ontario. Personnally, since I'm in the hobby, I only change the step a couple of time to verry few frequencies and it's not something that I look at when buying a scanner.

Do you know that Moncton Fire is on a Motorola Type 2 800MHz system? Hence if you want to monitor them, you would need a trunktraker analog scanner. However, Riverview and Dieppe Fire are on conventionnal. They have talkgroups on the Motorola system but they are never used (don't know why they're even there!)

Also, www.scanmaritimes.com would be a site of interest for you. Pretty much like RadioReference,it has frequencies and system information but for only the maritime provinces (NB, PEI and NS). If you haven't done so, you could join the facebook group called « Newschasser » (the one that has over 20 000 members). It's a group that talks about up to the minute news. They also have a files section. In that section, you'll find relevant information for scanner hobbiest in NB but especially in the Greater Moncton Area (like 10 codes, zone numbers, unit ID...).

Cheers

I picked up an SC230 for my Mother (AlbertCo.) a few years back. Works fine for conventional stuff around there.

You can set the step on it.
