I hate to derail this thread a bit but there is a standard at all of the phonetic alphabet that Portland or anyone else uses? It seems to be they make it up as they go. Like the other day, I heard someone doing a plate as "Sunshine Gracie John..."

Believe it or not there is a standard. Adam Boy Charlie David Edward Frank George Henry Ida John King Lincoln Mary Nora Ocean Paul Queen Roger Sam Tom Union Victor Willie Xray Yellow Zebra.

Multnomah, Clackamas, OSP and I believe Washington counties follow the same format. I believe Marion county uses military phonetics. You will hear the occassional -David Ocean Roger King- call out a Zulu Foxtrot Tango, but he usually learns quick that you get made fun of. Mr. Sunshine Gracie John is either being a wise-acre or brand spanking new to a radio.

The fire bureau doesn't normally use any, so you are liable to hear anything when they (very seldom) call in a plate.

fire phonetics

It is usually (not to be disrespectful) REALLY funny when you hear fire folks (or ems for that matter) call in plates - you can HEAR them thinking of words to use that will not sounds too silly....

like "book" "kangaroo" "rose" etc
really entertaining

:D
