I downloaded the latest FTDI driver and it auto installed on my computer, when I plugged in the usb cable for my pro106. When I run Win500 it will not recognize the driver. I can’t communicate with the scanner at all. I am running Windows XP with sp3. The computer is an Acer netbook with the atom processor. If I run Win500_Com the computer and scanner have limited communication. I can up load to the scanner and down load to the computer, and I can run the monitor. I can not get into the V scanner files from the 106. I keep getting an error message. How do I fix this problem?

Have you restarted the computer since installing the driver? It might not help but it won't hurt anything.

Run Win500.exe rather then .com.

Sounds like the exact problem I"m having. Read this thread : Win500 Error with Virtual Scanner Management

Note, I've been waiting on a response from DonS since 1/11 but haven't received one yet. It appears this is not a new problem, but has been around for at least a year.

@35delivery Iam having a complete communication failure as the computer does not see the attached scanner when using Win500.exe

Win500. exe is only method for full service.

With cable plugged into USB, open device manager and check for USB to Serial Port #.

Also, look for any yellow notice's (usually ! ).
If one is found right click and select Update Driver. Let windows try to find the driver in your HD.

If that doesn't work select Uninstall driver, then reboot with cable plluged in.

GrumpyGuard: Yes, when I attempt to use Winn500.exe I have a complete communication failure, just as you describe. I suspect that this is due to also having to use this computer for communication with a Bcd396T scanner using a different FDTI serial driver device. I can't remove this device since I have to have this capability. This failure is probably due to the driver or software "seeing" the port as busy when it actually isn't.

Therefore, I been using Win500_com.exe to communicate with my PSR600, but any attempt to access v-folders with Win500_com always fails with the error described in the other thread (Win500 Error with Virtual Scanner Management). You will note in this thread that DonS's post of 1/23/2010, 3:57pm states:

'I think I have been able to reproduce the "Refresh button never succeeds" problem with the _COM version, but never with the non-_COM version.'

However, as far as I have been able to determine a fix has never been issued.

fmon: I have no "yellow notice's (usually ! )", no "X" with any driver, and when the FDTI drivers are checked, Windows reports all "working properly". When FTDI drivers 2.08.02 were installed there were no errors during install. I never use the Bcd396T cable and FDTI driver and the PSR-600 cable and FDTI driver at the same time. I know this probably won't work although they are assigned to different comport numbers.

Does Device Manager show a working Com port? If it does, what version of driver do you have installed and what is the com port number?

Disregard the section of that error message talking about the driver needing to be 2.04.06. That is a red herring. A current driver will show as 2.8.2.0 in device manager.

Dan here is the screen shot for both the driver and com port. The driver is 2.8.2.0

OK! It looks like you have working com port with a current driver. It looks like you only have one com port on your machine. Change the com port to another port number, preferably 1 or 3.

I am out of ideas. I am not sure why your serial port isn't working. Have you tried PSREdit500? If it works, which I doubt, you have a Win500 issue. Otherwise, it is just a serial port issue.

Go into the windows device manager with the USB cable plugged in.
Select to uninstall the USB cable driver. After uninstalling the driver remove the USB cable.
Restart Windows with the USB cable NOT plugged in.
Run the FTDI executable to install the drivers for the FTDI USB Cable.
Restart Windows.
Open the device manager.
Plug in the USB cable.
The device manager should display the USB cable device COM port number. Make a note of it.
In the Win500 Program Go to the menu item Configuration Select programming cables... make sure that GRE-NNNN is selected
With the radio connected to the USB cable go to the Scanner Menu and select Download from radio and it should work.

Yes I have tried PSREdit500. PSREdit500 works in the direct mode (default). I even downloaded the newest version of Win500 2.0 and the system still will not communicate.

Thank you for all of your help. I will stop beating this issue and rethink my options.

If PSREdit works and Win500 doesn't, there isn't much doubt where the problem lies. I've installed Win500 on two XP and one Win 7 machine and it worked on all three without any fiddling with the com port.

Kieth I followed your instructions with no change. The cable is not even recognized as being plugged in.

If you run Win500_COM.exe and select Configuration -> Serial Port, what ports appear in the drop-down list? From your second screen shot in post #12 above, it should show "COM4" (and only "COM4").
