Greetings all!

I am so very happy to be up and scanning again. I went about a month without digital, but I have RS base 2096 now instead of my original handheld and I am delighted! No more audio problems and I will not take this scanner apart!LOL

-Guys, my hard drive is 97% full and I can't find the key to Win96 software. I have e-mailed Don Starr at least a month ago, with no response- so far.

What I would like to know is if anyone knows where the key is stored in the registry. Is there another way to reach Don and obtain a new key. Please-I really need to format my drive.

thanks,
-michelle

If you purchase a new Western Digital HD, it'll have copy software which will transfer everything from your current HD to the new HD. This includes partitions, boot records and all programs as they exist on the old HD. Once completed, you can disconnect the old (remove it if desired) and keep it as a backup. Or keep it connected and reformat for additional storage space. I recently upgraded for the same reason and got a 160 gig for 40 bucks after rebate. Data transfer took about 1/2 hour.

You requested, via email, a copy of your key on 06 Dec 2005. A new key was sent on 12 Dec 2005. It was sent to the email address you used to send your request (that is - I merely replied to the request email).

Try this..do a google search for BELARC ADVISOR, download it to your computer, run it and it will give you an amazing amount of information including the software licenses. See if this helps.

Hello DonS!
--I have checked and rechecked my e-mail daily, and just now I searched just to be certain that I didn't overlook your message somehow. Sir, for some reason unknown to me, I never received your e-mail.
--Reading other people's posts, all advised to be patient; that you always reply to requests with a little time and thank you for your promptness. Now could you please try this once more? I sent a new e-mail today.

Highest Regards,
-michelle

Maybe an overly aggressive spam filter got it!

Can a spam filter snag a reply? And I think anything unrecognized mine just gets dropped into the "bulk folder," and should be included in my searches. I sure do not mind to search again, wish me luck...

Registration key email from 12 Dec 2005 resent.

Spam filters: while I'm not sure about Yahoo (I don't know that I've had any problems, and the OP is using a Yahoo address), two others are pretty bad:

Earthlink - from each new sender, Earthlink seems to automatically reply with an email stating something to the effect of: "to prevent spam, I only accept emails from those I've approved. Please click this link". Of course, such a reply to an automated registration key email can't be expected to work.

AOL - I'm currently dealing with a problem where a user is sending me help requests. Every time I reply, AOHell immediately responds with a message telling me that the user isn't accepting email from my email address. Oddly, my email address is one to which the AOL user has explicitly sent a message.

I suppose that affected users of these services are somewhat lucky in the case of my software - at least I eventually see these messages. Most online purchases that I've made result in an emailed receipt/key that comes from an "unmonitored" email address, which would happily ignore/delete the Earthlink and AOL responses.

A little note on AOHell, They at least at one time have taken the policy that if your email server is not registered with them then it will reject it as spam. I can't remember if it was based off IP series or domain name of the server. You may ask the question, well how do I get my server registered? If you are a small/medium business or individual site owner, forget it AOHell won't deal with you. You have to contract with one of the big boys for service. But it just once again shows you that AOL thinks they own the internet and poor unsuspecting novices get roped into thier marketing.

When I had AOHell I had to send emails to each person who was having trouble getting thru to me and have them reply using the email I had originally generated.... then I dropped the overbearing, spyware laden garbage for something a little more user friendly... another thing I had to do with some of these folks (the reason I trashed AOL) was establish a yahoo account and minimize AOL and use the yahoo with IE.....

And a note about Earthlink, that is not the default, the user has to actively choose that option by invoking the Spam Filter.

As a side note, it is my policy that if someone contacts me via email and wants a response I will send the response. If in so doing, I get one of those messages Don mentions, that address goes on my personal blacklist.

By default, Yahoo sticks what it "thinks" are spam messages into a visible "Bulk Mail" folder. However, it seems relatively good at recognizing normal mail as such, including that from recognized companies. I always scan the bulk mail folder before emptying, just in case it caught an email I should have received. Once you mark that sender as "not spam", it will remember it & send subsequent messages to the inbox.

I know a few people that I used to email that had Earhlink addresses. Emphasis on 'used to'. Too much trouble.

That would suggest it is a user problem, not AOL's fault by any means. You don't expect Microsoft to educate you on how to use Windows do you?

See attachment for where the AOL user needs to set their prefs.

No, but I'd expect any "spam-blocking" solution, whether it's on my own machine or running on a mail server somewhere, to automatically whitelist any address to which I explicitly send a message.

That's how it would work if you wrote it, Don. Which is one of the reasons you'd never get a job in Redmond. :)

See selection number 3. When you send someone an email, their address is added to your address book. Those in your address book fall under 'People I know'.

Do you have their address from the credit card trans.? Couldn't you snail mail their key to them?

(P.S. Don...expect another AOL user registration in the coming weeks, once my 30 day trial runs out I'm signing up ;) )
