I was running Microsoft Security Essentials with Windows 7 when I found out that MSE is not as good as it once was, so I deleted it and downloaded Avast free version to try it out.

Once downloaded and updated Avast I ran a full scan of my hard drive, nothing showed up.

About an hour later while still on the computer I get a message that Windows Defender found a severe adware program on my computer. At this point I didn't even know I had WD, but after some research I found out that if you delete MSE then WD automatically becomes active on the computer. They both cannot be activate at the same time, it is either one or the other. So I did a deep scan and it found another adware program which I deleted, Avast didn't find anything.

P.S: I also have Malwarebytes on my computer and I update and scan once a week, it also had just scanned my computer before WD and found nothing????

Might want to scan for rootkits to make sure there isn't one on your system. They can pretty much render antivirus programs useless. Couple good ones are TDSSkiller and Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit. I've also had good luck removing rootkits with HitmanPro.

Hitman will keep a secured registry entry.... you cannot bypass it without having to reinstall OS.

chalk numerous votes for TDSS and MBAM. another one, ADW Cleaner.

You may have had a false-positive with Defender.

I run the paid version of AVAST, and I can say it's one of the best antivirus apps I've used. It catches, and blocks countless attempts, and my PC remains uninfected.
