I'm heading to Windsor for some training this week. I will be taking my PRO 96 with me and just wondering what there is to listen to down there? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I will be leaving on Sunday around 3pm.

Forget Windsor, listen to the MPSCS System - Detroit *****!

Yes indeed. Lots of calls for shots fired late at night lately. Talk Group 8046 Detroit PD Northeast District 6 / 11th Precinct, is my area. Can't wait for the weather to get warmer so I can keep a window open & hear the gunfire better. ;~)

Really? WFS has 1 Tac channel encrypted now? I wonder what the logic is behind that... Maybe they are using it as a test to compare against a non-encrypted channel. I can't for the life of me understand why a fire service feels the need to go encrypted. Bizarre.

To keep it vaguely on topic, I will mention that I plan to spend at least one day in Windsor checking out the new system when I visit Ontario in the summer, so this thread is appreciated by me.

Having said that, the encryption of a fire channel (tac/fireground or otherwise) baffles me too. Personally, I don't care who listens to what I say when I'm on the job, because I don't say anything I wouldn't shout in a room full of people. The other thing that bugs me is that firefighting standards bodies have already identified that tac/fireground channels should be as simple as possible to specifically avoid loss of communication due to complication of the signal. Digital adds one layer of potential failure. Repeater or trunk system usage adds another layer (or several layers depending on your system). Encryption adds yet another level of potential failure. I don't know that I'd want to be the one to tell a widow that her firefighting husband wasn't able to be rescued because we couldn't hear his distress call, because his radio lost or screwed up the encryption key for the fireground talkgroup...

The encrypted Tac is only used to relay sensitve info only and is not used on a regular basis. The fireground talkaround is analog..

The OPP and town of LaSalle PS as well as RCMP and the regular simplex frequencies are active in the
Windsor area.
Your 96 will not work with Windsors or MSPS systems

I noticed during the last exercise that Fire had the ENC channel , I dont know what is "sensitive data" about
putting out a fire ....maybe its the same "sensitive data" our PD used to have when talking to girls over the radio,...before they got caught...
Aircraft & Marine you can pick up though ,...
I cant really get the Detroit system from here at all I think its turned inward on their city

I thought the PRO96 can do 9600... ???

The PRO96/2096 do not care for TWR 701 on the MSPS. Directly on the waterfront you can get spotty receive with the stock antenna and a little better with a directional antenna but its hard to follow because the scanner cant track the system reliably
In the case of the Windsor system even with the latest firmware the 96/2096 simply wont track and listening in conventional mode would be tiring with all the encrypted traffic

These are not even remotely of a sensitive nature. They might be embarrassing, both to send and to receive, but they do not fit the definition of 'sensitive' in this context in the slightest.

It's extremely difficult for me to come up with an example of something a fire department might say that would enjoy the classification of sensitive or privileged comms, because the fire department simply doesn't operate that way. I guess if I had to give an example, it would be something like "John Smith set the fire in order to cover up his affair". A properly run fire department has no reason to communicate things over the radio that are so sensitive that they should not be heard by anyone other than the single intended recipient.

The only thing that comes to mind is if they found a drug lab or a tunnel to the US or both of the above with a couple dead bodies... that borders on police business... and in Windsor, PD is encrypted.

The local FS is now passing door entry codes for apartment buildings via MWS.

If you've got something to add about what to monitor while in Windsor, then please share.

If you want to continue the discussion on encryption on fire communication systems, then please start a new thread in the appropriate forum.

Seems we're getting sidetracked with some pretty silly examples of what some people consider sensitive communications.

wouldn't they just use cellphones or something for that?
Anyway One other thing I forgot to mention that's interesting is the Kelcom system
KELCOM II Trunking System, Windsor, Ontario - Scanner Frequencies
it has a mix of users & for different events, users rent radios , there is some security , an investigation
company that uses voice inversion , & the big raddison hotel is quite active
so every once in while new things pop up ,It is an LTR system , so if you dont have a radio that tracks it
you could still put the frequencies in , but you have to hit scan now & then to follow the conversations when its busy .
Also if your bored & downtown you can scan the gmrs frequencies , many business & people use them
as they are pretty popular now , I usually catch something with those .
There is alot on the Detroit system but I have no luck with it even when Im down by the river
one day when I can afford a 996 I would like to try a aiming a directional antenna at it but I dont know how
well that would actually work
