I lived maybe 5 miles northeast of you. I used to have a wire stretched from my house to a clothesline pole, and a 10 meter yagi. I worked Hawaii a few times over the 18 years I was hamming from there.

Yep, propagation all the way. But listen to the bands, too. When you start hearing WWVH - a female voice - on 2.5, 5, 10, 15, or 20, try your closest ham band.

I found that late afternoon/early evening is probably the best time from NENJ. Also try some digital modes. Make the computer do all the heavy lifting instead of an amplifier.

Well, you never know what will happen. I had a friend who lived further south from where I do, who moved back. He seems really happy and he's got a better shot in the North Jersey/NYC jobs market. Hey - nobody ever said we can't try a sked.

The U.S. time signal in a male voice is WWV from Fort Collins, Colorado. If it's a female voice, it's WWVH from Hawaii.
