• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

So what everyone is saying then is that all those Motorola radios our governments are buying is in direct correlation to the deaths of American soldiers overseas? Not to mention that many of the soldiers themselves are equipped with Motorola radios. So really, they're contributing to their colleagues' deaths?

Oh please.

No. Only Motex has made that assertion. The rest of us feel his perspective is misplaced for the moment. Lots of products are farmed out to cheap labor in China and there is no documented correlation to his economic theory of weapons funding.

Has anyone ever purchased one of these?
They are becoming very popular around the US and are unbelievably inexpensive. I saw one that a Ham club member has and it looked pretty cool. It comes with EVERYTHING you would need for dirt cheap. I know it will never beat an Icom or Yaesu in quality, but then again, you are not paying the high prices either. The audio is loud. Louder than my VX-7R. It comes already opened up. ( 136-174 / 400-480 Mhz. TX ) I ordered one just for kicks. ($121.96 shipped) Just curious if anyone on here has one and what they thought of them.

Manny

Got mine at the Dayton Hamvention from Wouxun.us

I paid $100 at the show for the radio with a drop in charger and software.
For $184 total including tax I received
The above plus
1700mAh spare battery
Dry cell battery case
Battery eliminator for the car with cig lighter plug
BNC adaptor
Case
USB programming cable
Spare belt clip

I think that was it.

The radio is very well made. All reception reports have been great. It has powerful audio output on the receive side. For $100 it's hard to beat. It also comes with an 18 month warranty on the radio and 6 months on the accessories.

Back light

No and no.

Not sure why yours does not have backlit keys. However the one I purchased does have very well lit keys as well as a very bright display. It doesn't have adjustable levels but for $100 I don;t mind.

Wow..too funny. Yeah sorry about that. I never turn the backlight on for the most part and I have no idea why but I forgot the keys are indeed lit....brightly. I just looked at them and it looked like screen printed keys at a glance.

Scanning with KG-689?

Has anyone figured out how to channel or freq scan with the Wouxun KG-689? Only way I can do it is by continually pressing the "Up" or "Down" button. Website says that scanning is a feature enabled by the optional programming software. I have that, and still can't find a way with the software to cause it to scan.

Get the reverse SMA adapter to BNC and the programming cable.

Small correction, the connector is NOT reverse SMA, it's a standard SMA, only the MALE end is on the radio. In fact, I found this to be a good thing because I could take off the crappy factory antenna and use one of my high quality Motorola VHF antennas from one of my Jedi or XTS series radios. Same goes for the UHF splits.

The model number is KG-UVD1P. Please note that there are two versions:
144/440 MHz or 144/220 MHz. You have to specify which. The 144/440 is usually the first rig since 220 in your area may be either thin or non-existent. If you do choose the 220 version, use the ducky thast has the blue ring at the base and disregard the red ring that is used on higher frequencies in range.

My KG-UVD1P just arrived today, took a while to get it programmed up, I did get the cable and downloaded the software.

In comparison to my VX-8DR it works just as well on the local repeaters.

I havent tried it yet as I dont have an adapter for my arrow antenna, but you can program split freq's for working the AO-51 satellite. As soon as I get the adapter I will start a thread on it, if it works that is hehehe...

Sold them at Dayton

The KG-UVD1P model appears to be type accepted now (WVTWOUXUN04) for part 90 136-174 and 406-470. But it's not clear to me if that's just one bandsplit model (there are several models on the Wouxun page), or are all of the sub models all type accepted for those bands, If it's just one particular submodel...I'd like to know how to tell that one apart.

I'd also like to know if dealers in the USA is selling them...all I see are sellers in China and Hong Kong.

I heard on newsline a few weeks ago that wouxan was going to have a booth at the Dayton Hamvention and were going to sell the new dualbands that were fcc accepted for $80 bucks each.

I'm pretty sure the Dayton Hamvention was over almost a month ago. A few posts back someone mentioned that they bought this model at the event for $100 + $87 in accessories and taxes. I'd love to walk into a store and buy one outright for a Benjamin rather than waiting 2-3 weeks from Hong Kong.
