I purchased a Wouxun radio and a fellow ham let me barrow his programming cable and for some reason, I cant get it to connect to the software. Can any one help me?

Yes I installed the USB Driver from Wouxun's website. This is what I keep getting.

what does it show in driver manger? it shows it's using com port 4. did you set up communication for the radio to radio using COM port 4?

Yes, and it keeps saying connection fail when I try to read or write to the radio.

reboot PC, restore radio if you can by the radio. or even may have to uninstalled software then re install.

How do I do a hard reset of the radio? Its a KGUVD1P

check the radio end

This happened to me with a UV52. Double check that the radio side of the cable is fully seated. The cable I used 'stopped' about a 1/16" form 'all the way in' and drove me crazy (er?) for a couple of hours -it sounds like the cable is talking to the computer (judging by the error message and screen shot) so I would look for an issue between teh cable and radio (might even be baud rate ect).

The software programming is nearly as difficult to use as to program manual. And every ham should know how to program their radios manually. The software program, unlike those for ham radios requires one to enter botht he transmit and receive frequencies. So it takes nearly as long to program by PC. RTFM does help a little, especially if have programmed radios from the Big 3 or 4 previously.

I don't think my problem is the same as yours, but I can't connect to my radio either, but that's because the programming cable is on Com10.

But the KG-UV Commander software and Chirp both work on Com10.

Change to a different com port

Try to change to a different com port on the device manager and set the com port on the software the same, and see what happens.

This was going to be my response as well. I found it best to take a small screwdriver and remove the rubber flap to use the programming cable.

I tried this earlier today. I am not sure if its the cable or my radio.

You need to research the Prolific driver problem, the chip used in most of the Wouxun, Baeofung programming cables is a Prolific imitation chip, your computer recognizes it as a genuine Prolific chip and load the latest driver THIS DRIVER WILL NO WORK WITH YOUR CABLE, you can find several discussions on this topic, you will need to load an older version driver and follow the instructions then it will work. Once you get it working always plug the programming cable into the same USB port on your computer.

For what it's worth, the USB/serial port converters are not all the same. 'Prolific' is one of them, 'FTDI' (I think?) is another. The FTDI driver seems to work for me better than the Prolific drivers. I have no idea why, it just 'is', you know?
I ordered a cable from Wouxun and it came with a driver disc. For whatever reason my computer wouldn't read that supplied disc (the smaller one). So, did a search for FTDI drivers and the one I found worked just dandy. Think it depends on your computer and what color sox you wear...

Finally Programmed

I ordered my own wouxun cable since the one I borrowed from a fellow ham was not working. As it turned out the drivers were very different. I have all my channels programmed but why cant I see them from the main screen?

I had problems with my Wouxun also when I first got it. I ended up downloading the USB prolific driver for the Baofeng UV 5R and installed the all in one driver, which finally showed me COM 4 and it worked great with the Wouxun programming software after that. I would not use any Commander software as there are several Wouxun radios in my area in our local radio club that now have UHF problems after using the Commander software to program them with . If you use the Wouxun software it will be fine.

I did a search for the Baofeng UV 5R USB driver and it's on several sites out there for download.
