WS1080 issues

I've had the WS1080 scanner for a little over a month and for the most part it's been great but I do have 2 issues I'm experiencing:

1) When the battery runs low the scanner just 'dies', now warning beeps, no writing to SD card, nothing. Is this behavior expected? I am using

2) When I launch EZ-scan it wants to update every single time even though I have the 'check for update' option set to every 7 days.

My WS1080 has all the latest firmware and library updates.

When you turn on the scanner press and hold the MENU button and tell us the all the versions listed.

Yes when the battery runs down, it shuts off instantly. Mine even shuts off in the middle of a broadcast. But it does that after the battery meter shows empty.

My friend's 1080 and my Pro-668 beep once, and shut off almost instantly. It's more of a "Hey, I'm shutting off!" than a low battery alert. The icon shows empty, depending on the brand of batteries in it, for quite a whole before it dies, or just a couple of minutes. I usually use really cheapo batteries in it, and when the icon is "empty", I just change them ahead of time. At 4 of the alkalines going for 53 cents and tax. (I got a great deal on a big load of them) a few minutes of runtime loss is no big deal.

I found it depends on the batteries. I notice with cheaper batteries scanner will shut off right away when they get low, which is bad for memory card. On Eneloops it warn you a few time before cutting off. As it goes by voltage to set cutoff. Recommend Eneloops, or new Energizer precharged with a good smart charger like the lacrosse that does single channel. Never charge the batteries in the radio, it will damage them over time and risk over charging them. Only go with LSD, "low self discharge" NiMH batteries if you use rechargeable batteries, are well worth the extra money, as they hold their charge a lot longer and last longer. Don't buy fake Chinese batteries that claim high mAh on eBay, they are garbage and lie on specs. The Energizer Pre-Charge are going to be the best deal. I have bought some new on sale for $9 bucks for a pack of 4 for 2300 mAh.

As far as batteries I am using Radio Shack 2500mAh and 1600mAh Ni-MH batteries. The 2500's last forever, the 1600's are not great but they came bundled with the fast charger.

As far as batteries I am using Radio Shack 2500mAh and 1600mAh Ni-MH batteries. The 2500's last forever, the 1600's are not great but they came bundled with the fast charger.

The Radio Shack 2500mAh are not that great, had some that I got with a item a while back, they not low self Discharge type and after about a few charges they do not hold full mAh, tested at only 1500 mAh after a few charges and started having high resistance and that was them being used, not sitting, notice will drop off when loaded. When to discharge them in analyzer and when from 1.20v to 1,09 in a second with only 250ma load. So more likely the issue. Only batteries I use now are Eneloops, I like the pro XX series, but white ones are good, or new Energizer Pre-Charge. They are both Low Self Discharge type, which means they hold a charge and don't self discharge quickly. Most batteries will lose 30% of their charge just sitting for a day. Plus LSD type have a lot longer life span, they last years while still holding full capacity and usually over. Once you try them you won't look back.

Fast chargers will destroy a batteries very quickly as when they get heated it destroys the cells. Never use those type. Pickup a lacrosse charger bc1000, or something similar. They have separate channels, while most regular charger charges batteries in pair, better ones have four individual channels which is better for the battery as you not overcharging one, as those regular charges wait till voltage is reach but if one is charge and other is not, will keep sending a charge to both till it hit that voltage. A good charge will use separate charge circuits to charge battery separate and will stop charging battery when that one finish while charging the other ones still they are finish. They also have a analyzer function built in and will tell you mAh of battery of each battery, so you know what it true rating is, or if the battery going bad. You can also select charge rate and discharge rate. You get way more out of your batteries I have Energizer Pre-Charge over 3 years old still holding full capacity, like the day I got them.

If you need a faster rate charger get the SKYRC NC2500, it cools and monitors the batteries and even give them a rest if needed, one of the best charger I used to date. It not just a good charger, but restored old batteries well. It bought back old creative lab batteries from my old nomad MP3 player from around year 2000 to full capacity. Drop resistance from 728 mega ohms down to 72 mega ohms and at full capacity.

Good batteries and a good charger are usually the solution to the powering issues for scanners. I am starting to use only Panasonic Eneloops, and the charger in the picture, this picture is old by the way. I am phasing out the use of Duracell and Energizer rechargables, those are still decent batteries, but the Eneloops have worked the best for me.

Also the Energizer recharged batteries are great, they are nothing like the old Energizer's with the dull finish, as those were bad and self discharge rather quickly and never hit their full capacity. The new ones found to be just as good as the Eneloop's so far. I Have some with over 250 cycles on some of them which are about 3 years old and holding full capacity and a little over consistently. They are Low Self Discharge type and run longer then the white Eneloop's. For the price they are a good deal.

I still have a set of the Energizer 2300mah. 1 did go bad on me out of a set about 6 months ago, so I disposed of the set. The 2nd set has worked good so far, but I am gradually going all Eneloop Pro. I see the labeling is different on the Panasonic Eneloop Pros you have in the picture.

They change the labeling mid last year when I noticed. They don't marketed as "XX (double X)" now relabeled as "eneloop pro".

These are the junk ones that go bad often and don't hold a charge, they also claim 2300 mAh, even when they were new, I don't think they reach that rating? These if they are any still around ?AVOID!!
