All:

I've been pleasantly suprised at the level of interest in the Wyoming communications systems on the RR forum, and pleased to have been able to make some small contributions myself. Following on to this demonstrated level of interest in Wyoming generally, I'm posting a write-up about technical jobs available here in Wyoming. It's written to be informative for people who maybe never really considered Out West in general, or Wyoming in particular, and it tries not to be too stuffy or uptight - becaues we're mostly not.

I think that it's related to Wyoming comms, and I trust that the forum moderators would agree. Please feel free to copy this to others who may be interested, or better yet, refer them to RR for themselves.

Merry Christmas to all,

Larry W7LES

Unstable Economy Got You Worried?

Looking For A Positive Career Change?

The State Of Wyoming Is Hiring.

The State of Wyoming is recruiting for telecommunications systems technicians and supervisors to work in several different areas of the State. Interested persons may visit the Administration & Information website at http://personnel.state.wy.us/ or go directly to http://personnel.state.wy.us/stjobs/index.htm for detailed position opening information in the “Current Job Announcements” section. Look for the class codes that start with the MT designations. Lower MT number = higher position. You can also fill out a position application on-line on the same webpage, by clicking on the “Employment Applications” tab.

These positions require a solid background and education in electrical and electronics, with an emphasis on public-safety land mobile 2-way and related communications systems, and an FCC Commercial RadioTelephone license or similar industry-recognized professional certification (APCO, NABER, etc). Requirements for supervisory experience, when called for, are spelled out on the relevant position announcements.

Wyoming is a major energy producer for the United States, with a robust and thriving economy based on solid budget surpluses every year. Pay scales here are a bit lower than metropolitan areas - it’s true, why deny it? - but balance that against the quality of life here in Big Beautiful Wyoming:

- a rural Western state with wide-open spaces, blue skies and clean air. Total population about 500,000 in 97,000 square miles is the smallest population in any of the United States. Not many trees, so no leaves to rake. Breath-taking vistas clear to the horizon let you see for miles, no chance of tornados or bad weather sneaking up on you.

- old fashioned Western hospitality. Folks wave to you on the road, and will stop to see if you need help on the side of the road. And you’ll get to know your neighbors, too, more likely than not. Wyoming is sometimes referred to as just your basic all-American small town, just with really long streets.

- world-class outdoor recreational opportunities. Small & big-game hunting, fishing, skiing, boating, hiking, camping. Snow King at Jackson Hole. Black Hills, Medicine Bow, Bridger-Teton, Shoshone, Wasatch & Big Horn National Forests. Thunder Basin National Grasslands. Devil’s Tower National Monument. Flaming Gorge National Recreational Area. Did we mention Grand Teton & Yellowstone National Parks? Weekend in Idaho, Utah, Montana, Colorado, the Dakotas, Nebraska too, if you want - they’re all right next door.

- no traffic jams. Rush Hour? What’s that? We don’t hardly even have a Rush Minute. There’s no aerial traffic reporters anywhere in the entire State. Don’t need ‘em – they have nothing to report.

- relatively low cost-of-living. No state income tax. Basic state sales tax is 4%, with a few local add-on options at 1% or 2% maxing it out at 6% overall. Second lowest fuel tax in the U.S. keeps fuel prices down - as of this writing in mid December 2008, unleaded regular gasoline is $1.289 per gallon.

- relatively low housing costs. Your typical 3-bedroom, 2-bath home with 2-car garage a couple of years old in nice condition is running in the $150,000 to $225,000 range. Property taxes are not too bad, either. Property values are pretty steady; we didn’t have the crazy housing bubble, so we’ve avoided the widespread housing foreclosure bust.

- company car & gas. Most WyDot Telcom positions provide an assigned “company car” in the form of a 4x4 truck (for quick response to the radio sites); it comes with a gas pump key and commuting is allowed up to 30 miles, on our nickel. Fleet Services does a great job maintaining & replacing them, too - oldest one we have at present is a 2003. Other than the occasional flat tire, breakdowns in our fleet are pretty rare - don’t want anyone stranded at a remote radio site.

- solid economy based on energy resources. The state has been enjoying repeated annual budget surpluses that, while we can’t absolutely predict the future, are likely to continue. Unemployment is very low, substantially below the national average. Likelihood of layoffs here: about zero. Low unemployment rate also means good opportunities for your spouse or significant other to also find work here, too.

- interesting & varied technical work. New State-of-the-art Motorola APCO P25 VHF digital trunking system and MCC7500 IP console systems. New Motorola mobiles & portables. New Alcatel digital microwave backbone system. Remote radio sites amidst unparalleled backcountry mountain scenery. Highway Advisory Radio HAR systems. Motorola Canopy short-haul wireless systems support ITS activities. New IFR 2975 service monitors with trunking options. All kinds of neat high-tech stuff. And WyDot is big on training folks up, too.

Come join us in the Wyoming Department of Transportation Telecommunications program: making a difference and improving people’s lives and safety with enhanced communications systems.

Pay scale: Pretty good.

Fringe benefits: Outstanding

Quality of life: Priceless.
