To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Who here has the tools to successfully edit the XL splash screen? I've followed the directions to a T, and yet I can't find how to force GIMP to save the image in the exact format specified.

All I want to do...because I'm a troll....is to make a Motorola logo splash screen. Blue batwings on a white background. Or black background, I'm not that picky.

Splash Screen
The bitmap must be an uncompressed 320x200-pixel image for the XL portable or a 480x220-pixel image for the XL mobile (for the mobile, the desired screen image must be rotated 90 degrees clockwise in the bitmap resulting in a 220x480 bitmap). The bitmap format must be 16-bits-per-pixel RGB565. To save an image in this format, use the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), Adobe Photoshop, or similar. Microsoft Paint CANNOT save an image in this format.

No idea, but I like the idea. I expect to be rolling out Harris radios soon, and I'd probably make a bunch of points if they said "Motorola" when they were turned on. Just peel off the Harris sticker and I'll be all set.

In my experience, the silicone Harris and XL-185 or XL-200 sticker/grip pads on the radio sides will be sliding off in a matter of weeks. Or maybe they've upgraded the adhesive since my radio was made in late 2020. As it is, the adhesive used is more like a glue that never fully sets than the kind of strong, semi-permanent adhesive you'd expect under a decal that's meant to stay on the radio for life. So if people don't like that Harris logo, it'll fall off by itself in a few weeks!

I'll peel those silicone pieces off and try a different adhesive.

I've been using my work XL-200P for a few months now, haven't had any issues. But I'm not an officer and won't put it through the full deal like they will. I have a second XL-200P I'm going to use as a trial radio for them. I'll see how it lasts. I'm sure it'll be an upgrade compared to what they have now.

I have, but its been a while since I've done it. I'll try and look back and figure out how I did it... but it is ( or was ) doble. Also, I had a friend who had his grip pads fall off on his 200P, he managed to order some newer ones. They did indeed have a bad batch of them at one point, but they have since been improved. I have not had any issues with mine, but it is a desk queen as well.

My 200P is relatively new and I drag it through the dirt sometimes… no issues with mine yet! It does stay holstered, with the XL-ESM taking most of the abuse, but that’s what it’s designed for right? It’s not a remote speaker mic, it’s an EXTREME speaker mic!

P.S. @ElroyJetson I can make these. I have you B&B one… I’ve just been too busy! But I have four days off now so I should have time…

I've got one on my XL200 portables that says "Can I have my Motorola back now?"

Got it from someone on here but I can't remember who. If I can find the file I'll send it to you.

I'd love to see that!
Did what I sent you work? I hope the instructions helped too! Posted here too, to maybe help others:

Launch GIMP

Create a new canvas at the right resolution and go ahead and set 16bit RGB. Get the canvas looking how you want it to look.

Then, “export as”

Select file type by extension at the bottom and choose “Windows BMP”

Once you type the file name and hit export, you get a small window with some options.

Expand the advanced options and under 16 bits, select “R5 G6 B5” (for RGB565). I also tick the “do not write color space information” box under compatibility options.

Hit export and you should get a properly formatted file!

Hope this helps people!

Yes it worked and I'm mildly amused.

I've noticed that there is definitely a responsiveness penalty to the XL radio if you have excess personalities loaded in the mission profile. By cutting down to just the one I need, the radio's response to control inputs has become much faster.

The software notes that come with new versions of firmware indicate that there is a factory mode and a recovery mode hidden in these radios. I'd like to find the factory mode.

Would any of you happen to have some older XLP firmware kicking around? Specifically R2 series releases, from R2A to R2D series?

14004-0185-01 XLP R02A28
14004-0185-01 XLP R02B16
14004-0185-01 XLP R02C11
and others?

That was me. I made it to put in the L3Harris XL-200P's that they temp loaned us as a joke. The sales rep was not happy at all, so I put them back to default.

Yeah, the guys at our local Harris shop weren't especially amused, either. Since we own the radios I left it on them.

For my next trick, I've thinking of putting a decent image of Mr. Yuk (the poison control symbol intended to scare little kids away from nasty stuff) on our radios. Figured it would be an interesting image for people to see first thing in the morning, preferably before coffee.

In case anybody wants it, here's Mr Yuk sized for the XL200/XL185 screens. Actually looks pretty good when it comes up.

I'm seriously tempted to start putting this on radios around the county and see if anybody says anything.....

Any chance you have a guide to swapping the splash screen?

Open Help, type in Splash, get this:

Splash Screen
Home > Menus > Radio > Splash Screen

Splash Screen

Opens the Splash Screen dialog.

This dialog allows you to program a user-defined splash screen to the radio. This splash screen will be displayed by the radio on power up.

  1. Click
    Browsebutton.png
to browse to the desired .bmp (see the following note).
  2. Click Install Splash Screen.
