• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Does anyone know if the XPR and APX radio antennas are interchangeable with each other? Specifically the APX6000 and the XPR7550e series.

Yes if you order the XPR7550E with the SMA antenna option

I've no specific knowledge about this particular scenario, but just because two handhelds have the same connector, it does not mean they are designed to use, or work well with, the same antenna. The story, at least, was that Motorola (and probably others) design the radio and antenna to work together efficiently, accounting for things like body proximity and lack of groundplane, which cause the antenna to present as nothing like a theoretical ideal radiator. I imagine that changes from radio to radio, depending on circuitry and frame.

As an example, there don't seem to be any UHF antennas in common between the two in Motorola's store: APX6000 and XPR6550.

(Someone will be along shortly to tell you that's all BS. They may even be right. :) )

Well, I wouldn't say it's BS, but in most cases it really won't make any difference as long as the application is the same. If you need GPS capability, you make sure the antenna has integrated GPS like the APX antennas do. If you need coverage from 440-470, make sure the antenna you're using covers that spread. Otherwise no, it's not really going to matter all that much.

I've been using an XTS UHF whip on my XPR 6550 for years, and it works better than the stock XPR antenna, and is much more flexible. Likewise I've got a VHF APX antenna on an XTS 5000 and performance is equal or better than the stock XTS antenna. I've even used XTS antennas on APX radios (no need for GPS) with no discernible impact on performance.

The callbox version is more expensive and not readily available to some retailers. The callbox version comes with no accessories either, just the bare radio. But it DOES sport a real antenna port.
