• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Hi everyone, I just bought myself a Motorola XPR 7550 and it still has firmware 2.4, what benefits would I get from upgrading to the newest firmware and would there be any downsides to it?

Id upgrade to 2.09 and nothing past

Theres a few threads on this topic that go into depth about pros/cons. TLDR; upgrading to CPS2 isn't worth it for most people

I'd agree with this. If you can stay with something that is still programmable with CPS 16 for the most part. Although I use 2.0 frequently, 16 still has it's plus's.

Ebay, FB buy and Sell groups.

Expect to pay $300-$450 depending if it is a 7550 or a 7550e model, and depending on accessories included with it and what EID's are active.

That's where most of mine came from. Some from recommendation from others and personal direct sales.

I bought mine on eBay, I got it with a bunch of accessories for only 450 CAD. Which is an absolute steal. You can easily get one cheaper than that in the US

Before 'upgrading' Firmware, you should probably have an idea of what your radio needs to do that it's currently not doing.

If your radio is working fine for you as is, and you don't need things like RX audio leveling, then what's the purpose? If you want to have the latest firmware just to have it, then I'd agree that R 02.09.0001 is about as far up as you'd want to go. Above that requires you to move into CPS2, and then you get into needing SUM subscriptions.

Your biggest upgrade improvement would be to trade up into a 7550e - which actually has better receive sensitivity and some audio enhancements that you'll never get in a plain 7550.

RX Leveling would be nice, my only concern is that the HAM band will then become locked. I have heard past a certain version it becomes unusable

Not sure what that references - but the frequency band the radio is built with is still available in every version of Firmware.

I'm thinking that your 'HAM band' comment references the Wideband 25 kHz enablement - but that's a CPS Software-driven enablement, not driven by Firmware.

So, I am not getting into the fray on the features in the later firmware packages, usually two or three a year. The 2.09 is vintage 2018. BUT if you really have R2.4 in this new boat anchor, you will have to find multiple versions of old firmware and CPS, walk it forward, and then make some decisions as to where you want to be long-term.

Every released package has release notes, and most of them are on learning.motrolasolutions.com.
