• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

OK. That standard mic clip is the HUB Hang Up Box. When the mic is attached to the HUB, it activates the PL. When its off the HUB, it de activates the PL. No sensors or extra buttons needed. Its a spring clip mounted to the inside of the clip and when it contacts the HUB it completes the circuit.

The old-style HUB was a little metal box with a slide switch on it; had to be wired to the control head. I'll just bet I still have one or two in a box out in the garage.

If I recall correctly the newer radios work through vehicle ground; if the mic hook isn't properly grounded (and the circuit completed through the hang-up button on the back of the mic), the HUB function won't work right. if you have trouble, try grounding the mic hook and see what happens.

By the way, it also works for scanning on some radios; when the mic is in the hook the radio scans, when it's out of the hook scan stops and the radio goes to the selected channel.

I haven't used HUB programming since we got away from the days of co-channel interference (neighboring agencies being on the same frequency); PL is always on for anything I program these days.s-l1600.jpg

The XPR series mics ( as well as a few others) do not require the clip to be grounded. The clip button on the back of the mic is actually two pieces isolated from each other and the hang up clip completes the loop. No ground wire necessary.

OK, solves that problem...

Years ago when I didn’t use a hang up box, I’d open the mike, & short the circuit so the squelch would always be on. Now, newer radios can be programmed to work the way I want. But I still have some Kenwoods where the modification was needed.

Hi All, I spoke with a rep from Motorola Solutions. He confirmed that their mobile products (eg the XPR5550e in question) do not have Monitor toggle, where as all their portable (handheld) units do. He understood why I needed it. His suggestion was for me to fill out a feature request form, which I did. I asked if I may share this form (link) with relevant parties and he OK'd it. So, here you go:

Your only option is to configure your radio as I suggested. When the mic is on the clip, monitor is off. When the mic is off the clip, monitor is on. No sound comes out of the mic, by the way. It's just acting like a.......well........toggle.

Hi CLBSquared, can you elaborate on how you can toggle monitor but with no sound coming from the speaker? My only experience with monitor toggles is that when on the speaker blasts static (until someone transmits, of course), and hence why one typically toggles it vs leaving it on. Thank you,

Mark

You’re wanting to turn the squelch down so you can hear distant tx aren’t you? I think I understand what you’re wanting to do now. When you configure the radio as I was discussing, you’re not opening the squelch. You’re taking the PL tone away and putting the channel in CSQ mode so you hear everything broadcast on that frequency. Which is why they don’t offer a “monitor” on mobiles. Kinda difficult to drive down the road with one finger holding down a button on a mobile and driving at the same time.

You're correct. I want to listen to weak signals that I can hear just fine with monitor on, and sometimes are chopped off with squelch.
