• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

XTL 5000 Control Heads and Remote Kits

Hello, I’ve done a fair amount of research on this, but I thought I’d ask the professionals. I’m an IT guy and have only worked with police Motorola radios for a couple years now. I know there’s some esoteric “mid production changes” related to these questions, so I am looking for the proper parts to source on eBay or whatever.

We have several XTL 5000 transceivers I’d like to repurpose for patrol vehicles. With previous dealings with our Motorola rep, it appears that once they are equipped with the AES265 encryption chip (I have several) and programming for local systems compatibility, these will work UNTIL the county TDMA changeover. However, that changeover has been pushed back so much to the point where it’s a question if it’ll happen in my lifetime, so these should work for us for a while.

The XTL 5000 transceivers were removed from old dispatch consolettes that we upgraded. I also have several trunnions, CAN BUS cables, etc. to make everything work together. What I need is control units and remote conversion kits.

Radios are of the following vintage:

XTL 5000L20URS9PW1AN

I’ve got a few control units:

XTL 2500HLN1468(G?) – Late 2008 manufacture
O5HLN691(?)K – Early 2017 manufacture

I’ve also got a control unit remote kit (accessory port, red, blue x2, yellow, USB):

HLN7041A – Mid 2015 manufacture

And I’ve got a transceiver remote kit (blue x2, mic port, accessory port):

PMLN5038A – Mid 2007 manufacture

So my question is: what do I need to pair with these XTL 5000 radios? IT’S OK IF NOTHING I CURRENTLY HAVE WORKS! I just need to know what to look for on the secondhand market.

Will my XTL 2500 control unit work for one of them? I suspect it will. Will my O5 control units work? I suspect they WON’T (I think they gave me a CH MISMATCH error when I tried). Can I buy XTL 2500 control heads of the same vintage? What control unit screw-into-back remote kit do I need? What transceiver screw-into-back remote kit do I need? I know I’ll need matching cables as well.

Thanks in advance!
