• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity.     The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Can anyone tell me if XTS-5000 or any of the 'newer' Moto-radios can be re-flashed with firmware to shorten or extend the 'length' of the ISP (Inbound Signal Packet) for use within an existing, P25 Phase 1 compliant system (e.g. 12.5 kHz channels, 9600 baud control channel signaling, IMBE vocoding version 6.X)?

Also, can the 'listen on control channel' be likewise shortened or extended for a longer duration channel assignment or registration OSP (Outbound Signal Packet)?

The mentioned radios can be flashed for operation with the 9600 control channel. When this is done, the signalling formats will change to accomodate the P-25 standards. It will cost a pretty penny, but it can be done rather easily.

9600 baud is the current P25 signaling.

I'm interested in standards not-yet-issued (e.g. IP radio).

Just as NEXTEL's switch based architecture gets you a 'channel grant' faster than Verizon's IP-based PTT, I suspect it'll take longer to acquire a channel across RF Sub Systems when using an 'open-standards IP network', such as is envisioned for the next (Version 7 Motorola) standard.

I believe that APCO Project 16 defined the system access time for public safety trunked communications, and I am sure that standard will continue forward in all public safety trunked systems. If the channel access time is large, PS users won't buy it. I'm not sure whether Motorola is going Phase-II in 7.x or if they are saving it for 8.x. At any rate, those radios will carry forward to phase II, as I understand it.

Phase II is 6.25 kHz channels. No one knows whether they'll do it FDMA (which is what MOT prefers) or TDMA, which is what EADS wants. (Side note EADS bought Nokia's TETRA business AFTER Nokia signed an agreement to not market TETRA in the States).

MOT's making noise that 7.X will be IP radio, but I don't know if they have a handset that'll do 'IP' all the way to the radio...we might have to wait another 9 years for one, at least from them.

If NEXTEL/Verizon is any comparison, system access times for a truly IP-based network are going to be slower. I'd like to know how much.
