• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Yeah, I would stay away from aftermarket programming cables that have a USB connector on them. Better to go with the aftermarket serial cable that has the DB9 connector, then use a good quality USB to serial converter with it.
I use the same thing, an aftermarket XTS serial cable with a FTDI adapter to go from serial to USB, it's very reasonably priced. I've had zero issues. I would second/third the prior comment about using FTDI for the USB side, you also need that for older Uniden scanners. I had problems when I originally tried a dirt cheap serial to USB cable from a box store.

I use IoGear GUC232A and an aftermarket cable. I also have a OEM XTS Cable with the RS232 non USB.. I can use the IoGear on either cable. Honestly the aftermarket seems to work better and is smaller

I've never had any issues with the aftermarket serial cable for the XTS(any) radios as long as I was using a USB-serial converter with an FTDI chipset. The "Prolific" chipset, not so much; there are so many cables running around out there with counterfeit Prolific chipsets in them I wouldn't trust them as far as I could throw an aircraft carrier.

Of course, straight serial works fine and dandy. Thank goodness for my trusty Toughbooks with real comm ports.

That all being said, I have an aftermarket USB cable for the APX portables which works just fine.

The TrendNet USB-serial converter I use has a genuine Prolific chip and has worked fine for years, not only with my aftermarket XTS cable, but also with my 346XT using the Uniden serial cable. I have a real serial port also, but it's on the back of my PC and not as convenient as plugging the USB into a front port. 🤷‍♂️

Prolific put out a driver update that is supposed to brick the counterfeit cables. I don't know how it works, but have never had my hands on a counterfeit cable, either.

And that's one of the reasons I prefer to stick solely with FTDI devices. I know they work, and I don't have to be concerned about potential counterfeit Prolific devices (or drivers which might brick them).

Too much money invested in these radios to take a chance.
