• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi all,

Looking for a little advice - I am looking to purchase a radio for use in 450-512 range, I have the option to purchase a used XTS3000 for $375 with 2 batteries and antenna, with front screen and limited keypad, no charger, or I was thinking of getting a panter88 xts 2500, same range, $499, no antenna, battery etc. I have the Astro RSS ver 06.50.00, will that program either of the radios? I think it will work on the 3000, but I'm not sure about the 2500.

Any recommendations? I think that the 3000 is a good price from what i've seen on ebay, (its not up on ebay), but they've been going from 400-600$ for similar models.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

For what it's worth, the software (RSS) is not the same for the XTS3000 and the XTS2500. It
is two completely different packages.

Also the programming cable is not the same for these two radios. There are different cables
for each of the portables.

As a personal feeling, you would be better off paying the higher cost for the XTS2500 radio.
It will provide more features and will be supported longer. If you don't need any of the
features or care about Motorola support and parts availability, then go for either one.

Jim

Jim,

Thanks for the reply. I figured the cables would be different - what programming software would I need for the 2500? I think that is the direction I am leaning towards, but I can't overlook the price of the 3000. I have the Astro RSS up to v.09.05.00

Thanks,
Dave

The 2500 does not use RSS. You have to use RVN4181 CPS software for that model radio and a RIBless cable (e.g. RKN4105A). As to support from /\/\ on a Panter radio, if it doesn't have any tags and an 123ABC1234 serial number do not expect to get any from Depot. If you send it to depot for any repairs it will likely be returned unrepaired.

Yes /\/\ is supporting and updating firmware from time to time, but a sortware refresh usually requires a valid serial number.

I have heard good reports about Panter radios, but if you dont have any re-arranged support you could be throwing your $ away.

The 1st thing I would consider is what Host/DSP version does the xts3000 have? I know the Panter88 has R12.00.00 for both Host/DSP.

I have purchased both xts2500 VHF & UHF (IBME FPP) for Amateur use and they are both like new radios.

OK, so I got a copy of the Astro25 version 12 software, and I am now at the point to get my radio - I was thinking of getting the xts2500 from panter88 as well as his programming cable. Will this all work together? The astro 25 v. 12 will work to program his radios, right? I've read that some of his radios dont work but hes great about swapping them out to get working radios... so unless anyone has any ideas as to where to get a 2500 without bending over backwards at a Moto dealer....???

Thanks,
Dave
