    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Looking to install an XTVA converta-com and want to use the 12 volt power lead from the lighter plug to provide ignition switched control point for unit. Due to limited power points and not wanting to use battery connection for this wire, any thoughts? This is the only true ignition switched point in truck

Should be fine. I've tapped cigarette lighter feeds to control the ignition switched circuit on radios without issues.

But it really depends on the vehicle, some are better than others. Just be aware it may be a noise source if you start having problems.

However, if you shared the year/make/model of your truck, you may find that someone is aware of a better ignition switched circuit point.

14 Tacoma has minimal power points that shut off when ignition is off. So these 2 will have to do..

OK.

I found that on many GM trucks the wiring for most accessories existed in the vehicle, and just were not hooked up. On the 2005 era Chevy Colorado's we had at work, I was able to find the sun roof circuit taped off behind the A pillar on the drivers side. I'd extend that wire to the radio for ignition sense. and pop a 3 amp fuse in the sun roof slot. Worked really well and super easy.

Ciggy lighter will probably work just fine, but if you start having RFI issues, that's a good place to start sniffing around.
