I have one. Very nice. Good audio. Solid feel. No digital modes that I don't need. Easy to program. Better than the little 4XR. I have both.

There are still new FT-60s available. Other than some limits from battery choices, they are still a top choice for a quality dual bander.

I own both, and my "easy-observation differences" between the two -
FT-60R: The "classic", built like a brick, tough as nails, easy to program, standard SMA connection, 1000 channels with Banks (great if you travel).
FT-65R: Smaller, lighter, easy to program, Baofeng style SMA connection, has Banks, but only 200 channels (not as great for travel).

I recently purchased an FT-65R after being reasonably impressed with an FT-4XR (that I have dedicated to a specific purpose). I haven't done much with the FT-65 so far, but I am noticing a small problem.

Whenever the radio's squelch is open, it could be receiving an incoming signal or it could be that the squelch has been manually opened, I hear a low-amplitude high-frequency squeal. I can turn the volume down, but I still hear the squeal.

Is this a characteristic of the radio? Or, did I get a bad one?

FT-65 has a Direct-conversion receiver, vs. Double-conversion superheterodyne in the FT-60. Direct conversion are more susceptible to interference.

I have a Direct-conversion Alinco, seems to have various 'quirks' on receive, vs my Icom that's solid, consistent.

I've had the FT-65 for a little over 6 months. I also bought it thinking it would be a good "on the go" programable radio but I'm finding it is really not that easy to program by hand. It was obviously made to be programmed by computer. I'm using RT Systems software and with that it is super easy. I'm not saying hand programming can't be done, but it is not as easy as on the older radios. Maybe something like an Alinco would be a better choice?

I have the same thing happening on my FT2DR.

I only have one Alinco, DJ-500. I don't find it difficult to program. But the lack of automatic repeater shift makes it more tedious than it should be.

Haven't encountered a radio that's difficult. Some just have you pressing more buttons, extra steps.

I like the Icom ic t-70a. Seems a lot of people go for the FT-60 to save a few dollars. I had the FT-60, found it lacking in many areas. Especially the NiMH battery.
