Zone question

I was working today in the city of Brookpark's service garage and they had a radio set up next to the disconnect for the equipment I was working on. The display showed : " zone 30 BRPK SERVICE"

the Motorola radio then had 4 buttons under the display for " zone", " RSS", " CHN up" & "CHN Dn".
What are the zones? And how do the differ from just changing the channels?

Zones are the equivalent of "banks" in the old-school scanners. Remember the days when you could only program 50 frequencies into each bank? Same thing with radios, only the standard is usually 16 channels per zone (because there are only 16 positions on the channel knob on the top of the radio)
