Regarding the factory options...

It seems as though all the Tahoes ordered by my fleet dealership have the WX7 option. The documentation from Chevrolet says, "WX7--For customer connection to front door speakers. Front speakers are not connected to the radio; radio audio is sent to the rear speakers." That having been said, I don't think my dealership is selling Tahoes with front speakers that don't play audio from the good time radio. Can you elaborate on your experiences with the WX7 option?

I will check on mine to be sure & let you know. I drove over 2 hours to get home & listened to the radio all the way home, I am pretty sure the fron speakers on mine are hooked to the radio.

I would loose my mind without tunes, I do not know, this is only a guess based on what I have seen so far. Knowing Kerr / Chevy like I do just pull the factory AM/FM radio and unplug the adapter and plug the speakers back in to the radio. Unless you want to run Left and Right audio from your radios / scanners in the vehicle.

I emailed the dealership and told them to nix the WX7 option if it keeps the front speakers from playing music. I'm unconvinced that it really does that though.

A couple of questions on the factory wiring. I assume yours an mine are close to the same??

I have 2 bundles of red wire with a black trace. One is directly under the master cylinder & one is between the fuse box & the left front fender. Any idea what these are?

I located a 4 wire connector under the master cylinder with a blue, green, gray & tan wire. I assume these are the same wires that are on the floor board? So much for running them all the way out to the grill as the book says....This same connector has the green with red trace wire for the headlamp flashers but I am thinking mine is not equip with these.

Also, I located a black wire under the passenger side kick plate. I assume this is just a additional ground like the one in the back?

The light blue, light green, red with black trace & dark green wires have me a little lost as well with the pre-installed relays & such.

I have harness on the floor marked for the 6J3, WX7, 6J4 & 6J7 options.

Looks like I have some serious studying to do! Any info, tips or anything you learned from doing yours would be helpful.

Since you have the WX7 bundle, I have a question. Are you able to get sound from the music radio to play through your front speakers?

Also, the wiring and relays for the HLFs is supposed to be behind the front bumper on the passenger side,

The large red wires are your 50 amp supply lines. You have one up front along with 2 relays under the dash. The other two terminate behind the spare tire cover in the driver's side rear of the vehicle.

You are correct you have to buy an extension for this harness from Kerr, I just cut the end off and tied in there as well as running a few circuits of my own. The headlamp flasher wiring harness is behind the wheel well liner on the passenger side front. You will need to provide a flasher but the control wiring is already there. As memory serves it is plug and play and the additional green wire is a breakout.

Also, I located a black wire under the passenger side kick plate. I assume this is just a additional ground like the one in the back?

That wire is an additional ground.

The light blue, light green, red with black trace & dark green wires have me a little lost as well with the pre-installed relays & such.

That is the control and output wires for the 2 relays that Kerr provided for you so that you can use low amp switches and control higher power products like the older halogen and strobe systems. They are also great for power line on your radio system you can use them on ignition timers or the ignition switch to turn the radios off when the vehicle isn't running. Lots of options here.

I have harness on the floor marked for the 6J3, WX7, 6J4 & 6J7 options.

The WX 7 allows you to connect radio output to the front speakers of the Tahoe. I don't recall the others off hend but they are in the book.

Looks like I have some serious studying to do! Any info, tips or anything you learned from doing yours would be helpful.

Sit down, figure out every component you want and where you want it then modify the wiring to accomidate YOUR system. Wires are easy to move components are not.

Lastly, pull a couple of extra wires above and beyond what you think you'll need because you never know what cool component is on the drawing board or the surplus pallet somewhere.

As WX4EMT mentioned, the WX7 option allows you to tie in customer installed radio equipment to play through the front speakers. It's simply a wiring harness where the speakers loop through. If you choose not to use the speakers in the door for ham/emergency radio purposes, leave the harness connected as is and you will have music to all four speakers. That's what we chose to do in an install, in turn we just dropped in some Motorola external speakers.

If you want to do it right and have great audio..abandon the 20 ga.8 stranDed , and install 16 ga. oxygen free extreme fine stranded or even better run 14 ga.. Yes being in the mobile electronics business since 1986 ...yes it makes a difference. I would run all the speaker wires under the rear set and add a digital amp from alpine. The foot print is extremely small. Just my two cents.. I like running my mobile scanner in my two zone radio. This way I can listen to radio traffic on the front channel and listen to music on the rear channel. Either way I have flexibility. Btw it's easy to run wires into the doors...a simple panel popper from any local auto parts store will work. I prefer the plastic tools... They don't mar.

Side note: use the blue sea fuse blocks with the clear covers.. They are the best. The big wires under the hood are generally the electric brake controls for trailer packages..

Red : power
Blue : brake output to rear.
Not sure the other colors... Possibly foot brake light for control to unit.

Some folks have asked about mobile hotspots in other forums and private messages. I wanted to touch on that subject here, especially for some newcomers. The mainstay seems to be the MyFi offered by several cellular carriers. The next step up is Cradlepoint Technologies failover and AirCard routers. Each has it's drawbacks and strong sides.

MyFi's are simple but IMHO don't provide good service in weak cell service areas. Some have external antenna ports but most do not and that makes it harder to increase the range of these already limited devices.

Cardlepoint offers a system that you plug your USB AirCard into and it turns your mobile internet into an a/b/g/N WiFi hotspot. IMHO this allows for better range because you can add external antennas and mobile amplifiers.

If I had it to do all over again this is probably the way i'd go just add SIM Card and get going:

Actually depends on the Cradlepoint. Some have internal modems with external antenna connectors - The USB, PC Card, ExpressCard versions do not as its specific to the modem (if those cards/USB dongles have an external antenna connector, not all do).

I thought about going cradlepoint in the truck or even with a junxtion box, but I juse enabled bluetooth PAN and works well.

Right as usual PJ, there are MANY different variations of the Cradlepoint systems. Caveat Emptor do your homework and get the right components to do the job because there are MANY different choices. Right now I'm using an old Cradlepoint failover router tied to a WiFi G Router.

I just want to drool on it some more for ideas

All of my pics are on a STaaS system (storage as a service), so editing and updating is possible but I'm too lazy to do it.

I am finally going to load up some shots from the last chase (9-1-12) in Eastern Arkansas with the Greene County Skywarn Dixie Alley team sometime today so stay tuned.

On a personal note, I have taken a Director's position with a new ambulance service and will be doing the COMM installs in my new ambulance fleet over the next few months along with various goodies for Mobile Intensive Care. With Dixie Alley's second storm season (Oct-Nov) upon us and the requirements of the new job I may not have much time to devote to this continuing project so be patient with me.

As for ideas on your project..... if you have some good ones please share them here. I LOVE new tricks and we all love pics!

I was planning to transfer over my myfi from my other Tahoe but this looks good as well. I had my Verizon myfi in a Wilson cradle, cradle attached to amplifier & amp hooked to antenna on roof. This worked very well on 3G in our mostly rural area. Recently 4G service was added to towns on both sides of us. I got with Wilson & have been experimenting with their 4G amp as well. Both units seem to help allot.

Excellent let us know how it goes and drop a pic or two if you don't mind. That is why I started this thread, NOT just to show off my stuff but to share ideas so that we can all do better stuff!

Think I'll change my signature to "The one who finishes with the most stuff wins!"

or

"If you die before this project is through we're going to divvy up your radios!"
