"The man arrested on G20-related charges Tuesday night was reportedly planning to monitor police scanners during the summit and feed information to protesters."

"he shared plans for using a radio scanner to monitor police activity during the summit and feed information to protesters via Twitter. The same tactic was used during the Pittsburgh G20 and helped give protesters a leg up on security plans."

Was arrested man planning to monitor police? - thestar.com

Yes Mr. Mayor (Premier, Prime Minister...) we do need encryption, see....

There is always some idiot. As a commmunity we listeners know enough not to openly divulge what we hear or learn. This one incident will be used by every agency to go encrypted "inorder to protect the privacy of what is broadcast".

I've seen this before. North America has become a place where the clamor for "tougher legislation" or to "do something" after anything the least bit unpleasant happens is now automatic.
No amount of us "smarten(ing) up if they still want to listen to the air waves" will stop encryption. Economics (the cost of encryption) might, but unless people want to get involved in a hard political fight - the laws of the land will continue to be written (in effect) by the tiny minority of evil nut jobs who misuse things. For example: Allan Rock didn't create Canada's gun laws - Marc LePine did. Pierre Trudeau didn't invent police roadblocks and checkpoints - drunk drivers did. Bush didn't create airport security screening - Bin Laden did.
We are slowly losing the freedoms won for us by our veterans to the actions of drunks, the careless, maniacs, didlers and other assorted idiots who do drunken, careless, maniacal, perverted things that lead to more laws being passed. It no longer matters that these people represent less than .0001% of the population. All, including you and I are suspect - and end up paying for thier misdeeds.
As long as the honest, upstanding, work-a-day folks in this country allow their peacefull actions to be curtailed by the actions of a few freaks - I predict darker times ahead.

I'm sorry, but how stupid are some people, regardless of occupation/race/living accommodations??

"For those who know Sonne, it is this tendency for mischief that may have landed him in hot water. In high school, Sonne reportedly planted a fake bomb that resulted in his school being evacuated, causing classmates to vote him “most likely to become an international terrorist” in their yearbook, according to a former schoolmate.

“He’s not a terrorist or anything like that,” said Dunn, who worked with Sonne in 2003. “If anything, he’s what I would term an agent provocateur. (He likes to) push buttons and challenge the security apparatus.”

At the Surveillance Club meeting, Sonne shared his plans to listen in on police scanners during the summit and disseminate information to protesters via Twitter, according to Hirsh and Andrew Clement, a University of Toronto professor who was also at the meeting.

Sonne may have also been deliberately baiting security officials, Hirsh said, and he mentioned wanting to purchase items online that would “trigger counter-terror alarms.”

...Dumbass. He did everything knowlingly and willingly to bait this type of response. I hope they throw the book @ him.. More so IF he did have some type of explosive devices in his possession. I spent half a year getting certified when I dealt with explosives. (NRCan ERD)

The real problem....

will be when the " rights and freedoms " people stand up and defend him. Sorry starting to sound "tavern-esque", Mike.

Well if they caught him ,...I guess its not going to be an issue?
There are , and already have been laws about the illegal use of a scanner for some time
to discourage such things
& I believe there are much more law abiding users than not
however with the current wave of public service agencies going encrypted
as I have been saying , it always amazes me how some people just cant resist
rubbing the various agencies face in it saying "Look what I can do !"
rather than keeping a quiet low profile,.The whole streaming to phone thing
is going to be another issue because some people just HAVE to flaunt it every chance they get
Sometimes I almost think its a setup , to ENSURE they get the encryption...
While I think you should be able to monitor your public servants that you pay for,
I think that unless some lawyers get involved , to reverse things or some hacker comes up with some useful software , This hobby isnt going to be what it used to be & will eventually just dry up
So enjoy what you have now .

True ,...the right to monitor I believe ,...the right to use in a illegal fashion... NO

He was charged by Toronto police with possessing explosives. He has also been charged with intimidating a justice system participant with threats, attempted mischief, weapons dangerous and mischief interfering with property.

Isn't the Queen making a visit next week as well? Dust off the old books and throw in a charge of alarming the Queen. :D

Fight ridiculous "prank" with a ridiculous charge. 14 years' imprisonment isn't too shabby, either.

Here's how this guy makes use of RadioReference:

http://home.ica.net/~phoenix/wap/TPS...rveillance.pdf

I bet y'all didn't know that the OPP are unmonitorable? You dummies with your expensive digital scanners only think you're hearing the OPP...

And ya gotta love his other Pirate Bay contributions: Goatmaster - TPB

I'm sure Setting Fires With Electrical Timers went over well with the judge who signed the search warrant for this guy's Forest Hill home. (OK, Ragnar Benson's Guide to Home and Recreational Use of High Explosives was probably a bigger hit)

That link didn't work for me, but here's all the docs:

Oops, sorry about that - long day...

BTW, I also like how he claims that 10 codes like "what's your 20" are used for "obfuscation". I guess he can't reference any of the few codes that they actually do use for that purpose because he hasn't figured out their meaning yet.

While codes can be used to disguise meanings, their main use is for brevity and understanding. Obfuscation is a distant third.
