Was right there. Dead...completely. Maybe one or two calls, tops, and nothing worthwhile.

Still handy to have a cb even of everyone has gone to cell apps.
It is hit and miss and varies on it due to technology, along with newer younger drivers into cells and other types of communication. Isn't like the old days.
Some places you'd not hear a peep over month others it's busy.
I live a few miles off of Hwy 421 near Wilkesboro and I rarely hear any truckers on channel 19. Heck, I rarely hear any chatter on any of the 40 channels anymore. I got started in CB back in the mid sixties in Charlotte and back then, there were very few people on the air.because very few people had radios back then. Seems like CB has reverted back to those days. I am thinking of getting my tech license for 2 meter radio but even with having a hand held unit already, there is not much of that going on in this area inspite of there being several repeaters in this area. I will keep trying the CB frequencies anyway. I hear the skip on 6, 11 and 16 some myself with a 4 foot Firestik antenna. I have a long wire antenna somewhere in storage, I wish I could find it.I have driven from the mountains to ocean in North Carolina without hearing a thing on channel 19. The strange thing is that every truck I see has a CB antenna.
Once I used my Midland 75-822 in the car. I put it in scan mode just to see if someone was using any other channels. It kept stopping on the skip on 6 and 11, but nothing else.
At home with a long wire, I hear skip on channel 6 and 11 every night, but nothing on the other channels.

The Marion repeater is fairly active and with a good set up you should be able to work it from Wilkesboro, there's also a DMR repeater in Wilkesboro and you can talk all over the world on that. Some CBer's got their license and moved to 10m SSB, I hear some down in Rutherford County so you might find some activity there
. I am confused about all of this 10m and 11m stuff at this point and looking for information that will spell it out for me in simple terms.
.
Thank you very much for that very informative explanation of the two bands. I will certainly give those frequencies a listen to. May I ask what county you reside in? I used to live in Haywood County but I now live in Wilkes County. Still near the mountains but I miss the Smokies real bad. All except for the longer winters and the snow.11 meters (CB) runs from 26.965-27.405 Mhz, 10 meters is 28.00-29.700 Mhz. Technician class licensees have SSB voice privileges from 28.300-28.500. Those bands are not open much right now so the only SSB activity you are likely to hear would be local. With your DX392 tune around the 14 Mhz range USB and you should hear plenty
I am about 1/2 between where you were and where you are now(if you take the I40,NC18 route) in McDowell County
Near Marion
Yep! It really depends on where you are! Things do seem to be picking up however, and I think that all the CB radio groups on Facebook could have something to do with it.I guess it just depends on time of day and location. In the last few days what I have heard:
Chan. 1 Flaggers on a road construction site
Chan 6 DX from the Caribbean
Chan 18 Husband and wife talking
Chan 19 Truckers, Logging operation
Chan 35 Ragchew
