• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I requested access to a local GMRS repeater system that was listed as open. Do i need to wait to hear something back from the owner, or can i just start using it? It's been almost a week and i haven't heard anything. I've got my radios set up and ready to go. When i requested access, i provided all of my personal contact info and my callsign.

You must receive permission from the repeater owner before using there repeater.
Think of it this way You have knocked on a strangers door, even if it is unlocked you need there permission to enter.

Even if it's listed as an open repeater??

Exactly what it says

Open mean open anyone can use the repeater, I have seen other repeaters list them as private and you must ask for permission.

Open does mean open, but you don't know how accurate the contact info is. I would ID on the repeater with my callsign and ask if there was a trustee on the air. Usually, you can request acces through them over the air.

The FCC requires an agreement between the owner of a GMRS repeater and each licensee using the repeater. All authorized users information must be recorded with the station records. Unlike amateur radio where open means free access, as it relates to GMRS open means the owner will usually allow other to use there repeater after requesting access and receiving approval, closed GMRS repeaters do not grant access to requesters as a norm.

I did key up on it last night and got no response. It also did not receive on my other radio, but i caught the transmission on my scanner. I was within a mile of the repeater location. I'm wondering if the repeater i'm trying to utilize is even in operation. I got the info off of myGMRS.com. The owner's license shows he's good through 2012. Should i mail him a letter to see if the repeater is still operating? This is the only repeater that was shown in my area on myGMRS.com, but i've noticed as i've been looking at this website, it does not seem to have been updated in awhile, and i have yet to see a response from the guy that runs the site as well. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Was there a tail on the repeater? As in, after you un keyed, did you hear what sounded like an open mic for a second or two? that will tell you if it is in operation.

A letter might work, even if you dont get a reply, its what? All of 44 cents to send one?

I did not hear a tail after keying up on it. I'm gonna take a drive by the antenna location and see if there's even anything there before i send the guy a letter.

Make sure you listen on carrier squelch for the tail, some repeaters are set up to run a "quiet" tail where the PL mutes after the transmission but before the tail.

A few years back there was an organization that published a list of GMRS repeaters for travelers. It contained systems whose owners stated that they were "open" for itinerant use, mostly using the common tone 141.3 Hz for access.

It has been quite some time since this list was published. I don't know how many repeater operators still follow that standard. I have all of the repeater pairs programmed into my mobile with 141.3 on transmit and carrier squelch on receive just in case.
