To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

The XPR7550 has the external antenna connector under the top plastic plate. It is similar to the connector on the old Nextel Iden phones and others. However the adapter cable I have for the Nextel is a right angle and the XPR connector is too deep in the case....so the search is on for a cellphone adapter cable to do the job.

1. How can I make the back-light stay on indefinitely?

I'm interested in knowing about this as well, and if the radio is capable of having the back light automatically turn on upon receiving a transmission.

You can't, without modifying the radio feature set. A method that cannot be discussed here.

XPR-7550 Channel Selector Knob

In comparing the XPR6550, and the XPR7550 does anyone know if:

on the XPR7550, if the channel selector knob goes around in circles? which means you can put as many channels as you want in any bank (1 through 50, as an example - and the channel knob goes from 1 to 50)?

Thanks in advance...

Yes, the 7550 does work this way.

RE: XPR-7550 Channel Selector Knob

Awesome. We bought a brand new (was a demo unit) XPR-6550 to beta/trial test against the Vertex Standard EVX-534. We have about 10 EVX-534's we are testing as well.

Our bank 1 consists of 63 channels, so we had to make the XPR-6550 bank 1 (1-16), and then bank 2 (1-16), etc. This is too complicated when someone goes to channel 26, and you have to calculate what channel 26 is.

So we had thoughts of switching to the XPR-7550 so the programming can match our channel plan. The EVX-534 & 539 models have the feature I asked about, where the channel selector knob goes around & around, so you can have as many channels as we need in any bank.

One thing to remember. On a 6550, position 1 on any bank is ch 1 in that bank. But on the 7550, there is no position #, because the ch knob never stops turning. To simplify things, if you take a 6550, & switch it to ch 1. Turn the radio off, turn the ch knob 2 clicks to the right, turn the radio on, it will be on ch 3. But do that on a 7550, the radio will still be on ch 1, as the radio was off when the ch knob was turned 2 clicks to the right. Similar to comparing a MTS2000 to a MTX838 where the ch knob never stops. So don't get confused on the 7550 when 2 different identically programmed radios are both on disp 1 with the ch knob in different positions.

7550...No matter how you slice it....the back light issues are a problem. Motorola gets a F in this area. Now on the APX back light they get an A+.

How much better is the audio on the 7550 over the 6550? Wondering if the RX of 6550's and 4550's would sound much clearer on the receiving 7550. One thing I HATE about the 7550 is that you can't use a PSM.

The rx audio of the gen 2 radios [7550, 3500, & 5550] sounds slightly different
than the gen 1 radios [4550, & 6550]. I can tell the difference w/o looking. When I listen to a 6550 & 7550 together, I actually slightly prefer the 6550. It just sounds more natural. The 7550 sounds good, but the 6550 sounds better to me. However the rx sens of the 7550 is hotter than a pistol, even when using
the factory stubby. It hears distant repeaters that none of my 6550's can hear. I have never used my speaker mike with any of my DMR radios.

Different better?

I have to use a PSM. I am a TV news shooter, and operate a live bonded cellular (TVU) backpack, and when I am on IFB I need to communicate with my desk, and my hands are full.........the Connect Plus system on my radio can't get out on my belt, so the on the shoulder antenna is a blessing. I am going one step further and bought a long range Bluetooth system from my in car XPR4550, hope it works well!

Just received my Moto OEM Bluetooth gateway system, $400 Motobucks.

Range.......10-20 feet, depending on which direction I depart my vehicle. Specified Mission Critical range is published as 300 feet line of site. I suppose they expect the microphone to be mounted on a mast on TOP of the vehicle? I am finding extended range by hanging the mic 1970's style from the rear view mirror, but how do they expect a utility worker to utilize this device if they loose connection less than the distance of the length of their van or truck? Obviously a utility vehicle will have lots of metal in many directions, even with the mic hanging. Seriously, 10-20 feet with the mic on the dash.

Very disappointed in Motorola.

Depends what your budget is. If you want a good reliable speaker mic that works for what it's worth I would suggest Impact Comms Speaker Mics. They are American made knock off speaker mics that mimic Motorolas, Harris, Ottos, etc..

Now if you don't care about dropping 150-300 dollars for a speaker mic then I suggest Otto Mics. They are Law Enforcement recommended and military grade recommended. Their better then pretty much any factory onboard radio mic for both quality and durability. Some are even fire rated for fire fighters if you need extra protection. Your radio will fail before the speaker mic will.

So if i got you correct, the commander II will work with xpr 7550?
