    Scanner Tales: The Regency Years

...frequency range you were tuning. Thus, the next purchase was a Regency TMR-8H just like you. I went away to college and could not afford new crystals for it, so I just sat and watched the neat lights of each channel being scanned. Then I graduated from college, got married, started with the...

    Bearcat thin scan

...the antenna connection. I wish I still had the radio, but eventually got rid of it when the metal case just got too many dents in it and the crystals were useless. I probably dumped it about 10 years ago. I really can't remember any tricks to it but it wasn't a particularly smooth operation...

Scanner Tales: My Programmable Bearcats from the 80’s

...I did a lot of frame changes over time when I worked at a shop for a time. Got good at it. Most difficult was replacing the t-r relay (if you could find one) Hottest receiver in any radio I had, before or since but banktuptcy court expenditures on crystals. Crystaled the channel elements myself.

...options. Robyn had a 16-channel scanner but it was too tall for my car’s space. I wanted to stick with Regency as I already had most of the crystals I would need. A Bearcat would need new crystals and that would add more expense. I stopped by one of my favorite haunts, Olsen Electronics in...

...had for my Regency FlightScan. For a while it was the only crystal in it as I had saved a long time to buy it, I couldn’t afford to get more crystals for it. Eventually I got others for the other local airports. Later we ended up at Palwaukee Airport in Wheeling. I already knew it well as we...

...I then powered each one up to make sure they at least lit up properly. Since they would not be receiving, I did not bother to check for crystals or if they actually received. I selected the best appearing example of each model and set those aside. We then packed the remaining duplicate models...

Pro-96: Programming PRO96 for LAPD frequencies

...The frequencies are about 6.25 KHz off from what they should be. I suspect that the master oscillator has drifted off frequency. Crystals can change frequency as they age. I have needed to replace quite a few in radio microphone transmitters and receivers. The VR4 adjustment in the...

Vintage Uniden Scanner Question (specifically about packaging)

...and I've packed the Regency models away but left out an old RCA and a Robyn model both hooked up and filled with still active 10.7 MHz IF crystals cut for the analog stuff still in use. The crystals would have came from my Regency crystal stock. The old Bearcat III's are full of mostly VHF...

    Baldwin County scanner feeds

I seem to remember years ago (and I mean YEARS ago, when scanners used crystals) reading that even telling another person about something you heard on a scanner was illegal. Maybe that was just my interpretation but I certainly can't see how charging others for the information is legal. But this...

    Scanner Tales: The Regency Years

...Car-Car Eventually I went to Mykroy Electronics (Later renamed to 645 Electronics, reflecting its street address) and bought a couple new crystals. Mykroy, in Wheeling IL, was a special place that had all kinds of electronic parts, a huge selection of vacuum tubes (Valves for my friends in...

    Scanner Tales: The Regency Years

What a nice story which brings back loads of memories! I had a whole bank of Regency scanners-not so great build quality but they worked great. I agree the HX'1000 was the best handheld I ever had. Wish I still had it. I had the mx'7000 years later but it was temperamental and full of birdies.

    Fixing a Midland 4001 - Requesting Component I.D. Help.

That tall silver can are crystals used for IF filters and reference oscillator (the one with red trimmer capacitor near it). It was common to cement these parts against vibration and the cement decomposes. Use a solvent and toothpick, to carefully remove the gummy stuff from the PCB solder...

Has LASD completely moved to LA-RIC's?

...They were crazy tall with the extended battery. This thread brought back some good memories. In the late 70 I had a RS scanner with crystals and watched Temple Station cruise around with those full wave low - band whips. Deputies had no Rovers....had to have radio broadcast at a call and...

...more surprised at it's performance. It has great audio and seems to be sensitive and selective. I'm going to experiment with a programmable crystal from QRP Labs which calls it a ProgRock2 to see if I can use that in liu of crystals. They also sell a DDS VFO that may also work with it...
