It is likely that what most people in this thread have been hearing is the modified WinDRM modem that has been reported.

To just add more data I am including a video here of a CODAR like radar hitting the 11175 kHz frequency. This may or may not be an actual CODAR, although it looks and sounds like one it has some operating habbits that are not typical for CODAR, such as changing frequency regularly. And many radars have the potential to look quite a bit like CODAR.

I saw your videos Token, and they are really good. Love the waterfall, wish I had that!

Is this with approval from the USAF? You said you thought it wasn't from the US, but another country. Or, is this somewhat of intentional interference? Why don't they just move to a different frequency? Or am I really missing something!

Ah yes that CODAR like signal is what I've been hearing on 11175 during the AM hours.

Keep in mind that I have no hard evidence of the source of this signal.

Based on were it is being received most consistently and the strongest (do not confuse this with most often reported from) I suspect outside the US as the source. I have been checking it with multiple remotes for the last 48 hours, about once an hour, and it is most often the strongest, regardless of propagation conditions, in Iceland. If it was a US mode I would expect it to be most received in the US and most often strong in the US. Every other US mode is, after all, mostly consistently received in the US. This is what leads me to think it is not US mil, it is not proof at all, but an indicator.

I doubt it is intentional interference, as it would not be a very efficient or affective jammer.

Is it with the approval of the USAF, and why don't they just move to another frequency? If it is a foreign source why should they care if the USAF approves or not? And again, does the USAF "own" that frequency internationally?

It is very likely whoever is the source of that transmission selected 11174.6 kHz without worrying about the USAF, maybe even without being aware the USAF uses 11175. As it is a digital signal it is very likely no one in the network actually listens to the audio on a regular basis so they may not be aware that 11175 USB is being used by someone else. And when you look at the overlap, the 11175 kHz USAF audio does not start until about 11175.3 kHz, the digital signal may not be receiving as much interference from the USAF audio as the USAF audio does from the digital sig.

The only thing you might be missing, if you are missing anything at all, is to think a little less US centric. And to remember that the HF spectrum is used World wide and sometimes not very well coordinated. Some nations do not even have a frequency coordinating entity, or might have one in name only, and that can end up with people/functions on any frequency they want, for whatever reason they want, often determined by whatever equipment they have on hand.

Ok, thank you for the explanation!

I didn't really stop to think about since it was 60 Hz's lower, that they might not purposely be interfering with them, and thought that nobody would know since it is a digital signal and nobody is monitoring it by sound. But, don't you think the USAF would try to figure the interference and act to suit both? Or maybe they are using filters to counteract it. I could imagine that the data sounds not very pleasant after listening to it for a while for the operators.

Heck, maybe they are trying to act accordingly to it and fix the problem. Or possibly, maybe they don't think the signal would make it this far over. But you would think someone would take action. That is just what baffled me. I can scroll through up a couple KHz's and find clear channels, but with HF, it may very well not be clear somewhere else.

We'll have to see! Again, thanks for the explanation!

Im going to an air show next weekend and if I get a chance to chat with the C-5 or C-17 pilots I will ask if they are aware of any new USAF data system being used on 11175 now. Not sure if they would give that info to a civilian but it can't hurt asking.

One of the keys to this most probably not having anything to do with the USAF is the frequency, it is not on 11175 kHz. Rather, it is on 11174.6 kHz and a radio tuned to 11175 would not hear all of the bandwidth of the data. If it was USAF and associated with the traffic on 11175 it would require the stations to have two HF radios, tuned just 400 Hz apart. Not far enough to not interfere, but far enough to require a separate receiver. It just does not make sense that it would be USAF.

True...Good point! Well at the very least I will try and find out if the interference is affecting their communications on 11175 at all.

Been hearing the same continous tone(s) here also for the last several hours only on 11175.

Yep, same tones here as in your sample. I did hear someone talking over it at least twice and I think it was Andrews but was not paying full attention.

Im not getting anything on the east coast. Are you folks on the west coast still hearing the noise tonight?

I just checked and the tones are also gone here in the Midwest this evening.

When I compared brandons audio sample he posted last night with the signal I was getting at the same time, his sample sounded cleaner than my audio did. Of course that really does not say if the source was nearer to the west coast or not but figured I'd put that in here.

I did not get to check with my Canadian buddy to see how well he heard it last evening but pathalogical's location is similar.

Just last night I caught the tail end of a 270 character EAM, there was some kind of interference on 11175 which made annoying to listen to but sounded clear on 8992. After the EAM it was just the regular sound of static. Probably just coincidence.
