    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So one of our SAR members picked up a 2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD Denali with a Duramax. I installed his NMO mounts a few weeks ago in the back that was a challenge due to a sunroof. We plan to put the radios in the center console as we did on his Tahoa and I was able to get power and antenna cables there pretty easily. The issue I hit was getting power from inside to outside engine compartment. The truck has way to many options and I can't even get my arm around the back of the engine to feel around. The Durama fills the engine bay and then some. I am sure this is the same as a standard 2500HD so looking for ideas to get power out under the hood. I looked around under the dash hoping they had a power stud some place but nothing. Has anyone done a similar one and can give me a few pointers on getting power run. I have 3 motorola power cables I need to get out, in addition to a speaker wire.

Find master boot for the electrical harness. It is located next to and slightly above the steering column. It is a double walled boot and you can run cabling through it as long as you stay away from the center.

Find master boot for the electrical harness. It is located next to and slightly above the steering column. It is a double walled boot and you can run cabling through it as long as you stay away from the center.

I have used that location on earlier Chevy trucks. I can't even see the boot from under the dash on this truck, nor under the hood. I'll have to dig around more. I guess it may be easier to just pop a new hole in the floor and run under the truck but not a fan of doing it that way.

It's hidden more behind the dash than it is under the dash. Not easy to get to but can be accessed.

i always used the gromlet that holds the speedometer cable in place which should be easy to find.

Modern vehicles haven't used speedometer cables in a very long time. But, good thinking...

I've done a few installs on the newer GM pickups, but none with the Diesel. I feel your pain. Might time to start looking at other access points. I had an F-150 where I ran the power feed down under the truck and through a grommet. Power was fed to a fuse block behind the rear seat, so it wasn't a longer cable run. You may have to spend some quality time under the truck poking around.

The easiest (though not easy at all) is to go through the main harness boot. Its in the kickplate up under the dash to the left of the brake pedal. Take a stiff rod and go through the double boot below and to the right of the master harness. That will place you through into the engine compartment. If done right, you can get two 8g wires through there without issue.

Yup same place everyone says. Apparently many have not done a duramax loaded truck yet. I can barely get my hand to the boot from inside, can't see it at all. Under the hood its burried behind the back of the engine.

I did mine on the pass side, i drilled the hole a little higher than where the floor mat stopped, if that makes sense. I was able to see that from the underside of the truck and i just fed the wires down to it.

I went through the back cab vents because my equipment was under the backseat.

In your case, check the parking brake grommet as well. Used that on many GM trucks.

I drill a hole in one of the body plugs on the floor just forward of the seats and use a grommet and seal it all up. Then run it forward and up behind the inner fender liner. Use plenty of split loom for protection. The only ground point would be on the right front body mount bracket on the frame behind the front wheel. Nothing in the engine bay anymore.


I despise installs on the new GM trucks.
