KUTV - What started off as a traffic stop, turned into a SWAT standoff with a man holed up in a Midvale apartment for over four hours Monday morning.
Around 3 a.m. Midvale police pulled a man over for a traffic violation. Officers say the man acted strange and was asked to get out of the car. Officers noticed drug paraphernalia on the man and attempted to arrest him.
The man resisted and was shot by a stun gun, but the man pulled out the prongs of the Taser, assaulted an officer and took off, according to police.
The suspect ran into an apartment near 7200 South 150 West. Shortly thereafter, another man ran out of the unit, telling police the suspect forced his way into his apartment and held him hostage. It's not clear how the man got away but he was not harmed.
Negotiators made contact with the man and managed to talk him out of the apartment around 7:30 a.m.
Authorities don't know who the man is at this time and are unsure why he fled in the first place.
He now faces a number of charges.
"We do have at least the assault on the police officer, we have an escape from custody, and we have kidnapping and burglary charges that we are possibly looking at at this point," said Sgt. Marcello Rapella, Midvale Police Department.
Another person was taken into custody on an unrelated matter.
