I saw that when it was first posted, and frankly I like the idea, but it isn't going to happen because (a.) this is primarily going to be a mobile install that will spend most of its life stuck in a RAM mount, and (b.) my hands just aren't steady enough anymore for messing around inside of these modern electronics.I'd have to find a tech willing to do it, and I'm a little unclear on whether or not the external GPS function gets lost when that mod is done. Since it will primarily be mobile, I'd hate to lose that...I'd have to try to mount it on the windshield, which I would absolutely hate.
My 436 lives in a RAM mount in the center console of a Chevy Silverado (between driver and passenger seats), and the internal GPS has had no trouble keeping a satellite lock. I've tested it in my basement, and the only place I got the GPS to lose satellite lock was inside a cubbyhole in a metal cabinet with the door partially closed. The way I mod the scanner, the external GPS port can still be used, provided that the internal GPS is turned off and the baud rate is set for the external GPS. The internal runs at 9600bps, and the externals run at 4800bps. So switching requires toggling the GPS power switch and changing a scanner menu setting. It's not the most user friendly process, but you shouldn't ever need the external GPS unless you're in an unusually RF-shielded vehicle, like a tank.
