I saw that when it was first posted, and frankly I like the idea, but it isn't going to happen because (a.) this is primarily going to be a mobile install that will spend most of its life stuck in a RAM mount, and (b.) my hands just aren't steady enough anymore for messing around inside of these modern electronics.:( I'd have to find a tech willing to do it, and I'm a little unclear on whether or not the external GPS function gets lost when that mod is done. Since it will primarily be mobile, I'd hate to lose that...I'd have to try to mount it on the windshield, which I would absolutely hate.

My 436 lives in a RAM mount in the center console of a Chevy Silverado (between driver and passenger seats), and the internal GPS has had no trouble keeping a satellite lock. I've tested it in my basement, and the only place I got the GPS to lose satellite lock was inside a cubbyhole in a metal cabinet with the door partially closed. The way I mod the scanner, the external GPS port can still be used, provided that the internal GPS is turned off and the baud rate is set for the external GPS. The internal runs at 9600bps, and the externals run at 4800bps. So switching requires toggling the GPS power switch and changing a scanner menu setting. It's not the most user friendly process, but you shouldn't ever need the external GPS unless you're in an unusually RF-shielded vehicle, like a tank.

FYI that the Walmart store pickup deal for the Uniden BCD436HP is still alive this morning (07:00 EDT) and the Ebates 10% cash back rebate offer is also still alive.

Walmart store pickup price: $323.97 ($485.96 minus $161.99 store pickup discount)
Ebates 10% cash back rebate for purchase at Walmart: $32.39
Final price after Ebates rebate: $291.58 (plus any applicable state/local sales tax)

Please see my posts #12, 15, 17 and 20 above in this thread for a much more detailed explanation and further clarification of this deal. There is also a link in post #12 above (http://forums.radioreference.com/uniden-prospective-owners/355128-343-50-walmart.html#post2782923) to join Ebates to get the 10% cash back rebate if you are not already a member.

Thanks very much for the information and helpful tips for the Walmart/EBates deal. Just pulled the trigger on a Uniden BCD436HP and it worked exactly as you described. See below from the Walmart order confirmation e-mail. I ordered through the Walmart link on EBates to make sure to get the additional 10% off of the $323.97 price after the store pick-up discount. That's another $32.39 coming my way, making the net cost $313.45. The store pick-up discount for the Whistler scanners is back down to less than $10 now, so the $161.99 for the Uniden is either a mistake that hasn't been caught yet....or a very good deal for a short amount of time. I didn't really need another scanner, but....;-)

Walmart Order Summary
Uniden BCD436HP Bearcat Digital Handheld Scanner
Order subtotal: $485.96
Pickup discount: -$161.99
Pickup: Free
Total tax: $21.87
Order total: $345.84

Click on "Compare all 5 sellers" in the bottom right-hand corner and you will see the complete list and you will be in business to select Walmart for the store pickup discount. The store pickup discount is alive and well as of 15:40 EDT.
So it is, still available as of 1517 hours EDT today (06/28). Sorry, I just did not see that. I may still order a second one!

You're welcome and glad to see you got in on this great deal on the BCD436HP.

It's unbelievable but this offer is still alive this morning with only a very slight change in the numbers. The Walmart price (as of 07:00 EDT) is now $494.32 with a store pickup discount of $164.77 making your purchase price $329.55.

The thing that sets this deal ahead of the other deals being posted (i.e. from Amazon) is the extra 10% cash back rebate from Ebates for making your purchase at Walmart. That is also still alive today but I believe it is scheduled to end tomorrow (06-30-2017). Go here on RR for further details/information on Ebates: http://forums.radioreference.com/uniden-prospective-owners/355128-343-50-walmart.html#post2782923

Bottom line price right now is $296.60 ($329.55 minus $32.95 Ebates 10% rebate) plus any applicable sales tax for your state/locality.

I went and ordered a second one yesterday evening. This price is just too good to walk away from, especially with the Ebates bonus.

Now I have to figure out what I should sell or give away to make room for the 436s.

Same here! I'll be selling my GRE PSR-500 now for a "song" ;-)
Yep, I'm thinking the Pro-651 I snagged at a yard sale for $5 will be finding a new home. I kind of hate to let it go even though it is dead nuts that I'll make money on it. Reason for the cheap price was that it didn't work, the internal connector wasn't snapped all the way together, one good squeeze and it came to life. God bless people too dumb to make warranty claims.:p Also got some non-digital stuff that really should go bye-bye...I'm not running a museum.

But P2 is on the way here, and I'm becoming addicted to DMR, so the radios that don't decode those will likely be a-movin' out! I may keep my Pro-197 and dedicate it to conventional/analog, it's been a faithful friend for quite awhile and nothing beats the audio quality of that little bugger.

Have to thank you again. I just checked Ebates and my total cash back is $58.60! They gave me 10% off of the Walmart price of $485.96 and an additional $10.00 welcome bonus for joining Ebates. That brings my net cost for the BCD436HP down to $287.24! What a deal :)

Glad to hear you already have your Ebates rebate showing up in your account. I got in on the Whistler TRX-2 deal at Walmart on Sunday and the rebate money just showed up in my Ebates account today (Thursday). When you factor in the additional 10% rebate from Ebates, I don't think I have ever personally seen a lower delivered price on a brand-new BCD436HP or TRX-2 being sold by a reputable/authorized seller.

Mistake

I wonder is this big pick up discount was some sort of mistake . or if maybe it will surface again in the future

I don't know. I suspect a mistake but who can really say? Wally World won't admit it if it was, but since they're not tooting about it being a "special promo," I suspect a mistake of some sort.

All I know for sure is, I picked up my first 436 last night, going to set it up this afternoon. The second one is locked in and scheduled to be in by 7/5. As Hagar the Horrible often said, "I got mine."

Like you, I too am not a fan of the BCD436HP display especially the single color Uniden chose. However I knew that going in and the Walmart/Ebates sale price we grabbed was just too good to pass up (net cost of $287.24 for me). I set the display contrast to 12 and it's a bit better for viewing. As far as the tiny sound from the speaker, I'm currently running my unit in the house using a powered set of PC speakers and the sound is significantly improved. I'll be sticking with this set-up for now and will continue to use my BCD325P2 in the car (connected through the car stereo). Good luck with your GPS test with the 436!

I think Amazon prices can vary by customer. I constantly see good deals posted on this forum but when I check my Amazon account the price is always much higher. I've been a Prime subscriber for years but never seem to get any great deals in general.

The 436 at Amazon has had a price spread of almost $100 in the last week. Sometimes it changes multiple times in a 24 hour period. Heck, there was even a few hours earlier in the week where it didn't even qualify for Prime shipping, and the price was nearly MSRP.

If not already familiar, Google Amazon Dynamic Pricing. Many consumers are unaware of this concept and implementation by Amazon.

As of right now the Amazon BCD436HP is $ 361.
