Can anyone give me a recommendation for an easy to operate transceiver for 6 meter ssb? Thanks for your help!
Seeing that you hold a General class license, do you already have an HF rig that covers 80 through 10 Meters but lacks 6 Meters? Is that why you are looking for a standalone 6 Meter rig? As has already be said, most modern rigs are going to cover 160 through 6 Meters. If you don't have one, while a little more expensive, you will broaden your horizon immensely. The MFJ-9406X mentioned in Post #3 above is a good starter rig that will get you on 6 Meters and would be easy to use, however, you might be disappointed in the long run of not having better noise rejection features, lack of better metering and waterfall display, computer interface, etc. that a rig like the
Yaesu FT-991A would give you for a street price of about $1,150. While that may sound like a lot of money, it covers:
RX 30 kHz - 56 MHz, 118 MHz - 164 MHz, 420 MHz - 470 MHz (specified performance, amateur bands only)
TX 1.8 MHz - 54 MHz, 144 MHz - 148 MHz, 430 MHz - 450 MHz (amateur bands only)
Not only do you have 160 to 6 Meter and 2 Meter / 70 Centimeter transmit and receive capability, you also have an excellent shortwave broadcast receiver. You'll spend $330 for MFJ's 6 Meter bare-bone transceiver so we have a $1,150-$330=$820 delta. If you had to buy a 146/440 MHz rig, you are looking at about $400 for a C4FM digital transceiver as the Yaesu FT-991A is capable of. So now the cost delta is down to $820-$400=$420. To get an HF rig for $420, it probably will not be modern.
Sooooooo... I don't know your situation but think this through and down the road before you buy anything. There is a lot out the and what you purchase today can last you for a very long time. Happy hunting!
