When is this supposed to light up? For weather alerts only? Mine does not come on for
channel alerts. Is there a problem with the scanner? Thanx for any input

Hello,

The ALERT LED will illuminate after a WX Alert, or if you program a POI as a Dangerous Road or X-ing, and are within the Speed and Distance parameters set when using the BCD996T with a GPS. No, there is nothing wrong with your unit. :)

This is a small test for the 396. I think it also works on the 996.

Turn your unit ON while holding the 0, 1 and 3 keys simultaneously.

TURN THE VOLUME DOWN FIRST!!!

See if your ALERT LED comes on.

Thanx for the info and sorry for the delay in the return

Curiously, I also asked Uniden about this and they said it does not work on the 996 and that it is for a 'similar model?' But after re-reading their reply, I think they might have been referring to it's function in relation to the close call feature

I have the opposite problem the alert light on mine will not go out. Uniden's answer is to send it in for repair.

Alert indicator

That's a bummer. I see you have two very nice old radios: the Kenwood R-5000 and the venerable Icom R-7000--wish I would have picked up one of each, back in the day, when they were available!

Thanks, I still enjoy using them. :)

Here is a simple test that will work to verify the indicators:

Turn "ON" your 996 while simultaneously holding keys 0, 1 and 9.

Press the Squelch button repeatedly.

Display will say key touch test Squech key push

Now push in Vol key Display color will change and the alert lamps will light.

"Alert" and "Close-Call" indicators will light
