996XT P25 Adjustment ?

I'M Receiving P25 pretty bad, is there any Adjustments on the 996XT, so I can adjust for better P25 ........... I believe there was a adjustment on the 996T, and once I got it dialed in, I never touch it again.

There is not an actual Mute button, but you can temporarily silence the audio by pressing the Menu key. Pressing it again returns to where you were.

I'm quoting kb8rvp from another post.

If you press and hold the "hold" button and turn on the scanner the screen will flash colors and allow you to get into the P25 settings. Then press menu and go to settings and then go to P25 adjust level. You will notice it is set to 50 for the default auto setting. If you change it to 200 (press 200 enter) now the default level will always be 8 and if you change it to 100 the default will be set to 11. You can check this when scanning by pressing Func then volume, Func then volume to watch the threshold. Auto works well for me but setting it to 200 isn't bad because most of the digital systems level off around 8 using the auto setting anyway. If you find that the default setting works best just set it back to 50 by pressing 050 enter.

It creates a new default starting point for the scanner to begin P25 auto decoding on a moto system. If you put your XT in "Display Mode 3" and observe, for example, that the system's optimum decode point settles around say "12", you might benefit by changing the default level to "100", which means the radio will begin decoding at about "11" and thus lock onto the systems optimim decode point faster (in theory anyway). Can only be re-set at the System level, however. Cannot be individually set for each site.

I've experimented with this with the Illinois Starcom simulcast/multi-path Systems, and really haven't found an optimum setting yet.

I have watched the decode err:---- rate on many ILL Starcom digital towers and the decode "AUTO" go from 7-11, usually favoring 7-8 and err rate at "0" but still LOOSE the transmission for many hours, im convinced that unless your in a good range of the tower and perfect landscape and you have a very good signal into the scanner its going to loose the multipath signal....These scanners seem to work much better with a beam than a conventional triband...This ILL-Starcom is still being perfected according to a tech who is my neighbor and proof is in the cops still saying "THIS IS A DEAD AREA" here in Will Co....This morning the bands were wide open, here in Joliet i was having real trouble with T113,101 and 102 that are within 20 miles of me and i could hear perfect T108-Lake Co, T120-McHenry, and T133-Ottawa which is 50 miles away , they all seemed to be canceling out the close towers...By noon today all that cleared up and i could hear the locals again=CRAZY....

I still believe a different Modulation format is needed for Multi-path systems. Mine still favors the FM setting, but still have audio garble-drop outs, but the carrier is still holding the talkgroup. The audio then returns perfectly after a short time of silence. Auto and NFM have similar results, but it seems to hold the FM modualtion better.

I've never had the opportunity to monitor a multi-path system such as yours'. Thus, I don't know what, if any, benefit might be derived from changing the P25 decode setting in your listening area. On my local Moto Smatzone II system, I have found that a setting of "100" provides the best performance.

Others may be able to offer good insights into how the P25 adjustment may affect scanner performence for your local system.

I do agree with "werinshades" now that "FM" is better than NFM and AUTO-NFM, its easy to change it using "Func-9"...Today i traveled over to Kane Co ILL and was close to T126-Kane Co and on my 396XT reception was PERFECT....Also i cannot receive T113-District5 RT53 -Lockport ILL here at my location because its down in a hole and the curve of the earth is what im saying on these signals, but when i left town and went to higher elevation T113 was perfect...Maybe i should mount a "beam " on the roof of the car!!....

so all i would have to do to my 396 xt is too punch in 200 to have it stay on 8 ? and would it always decode on 8 ? i had the 396 t before and could change the threshold settings on that radio before and my radio always worked best on the 8, is this the way for us to change the threshold settings on the 396 xt being you cant do it any other way ? and if so i guess you can only do this for all the systems in the radio, ? because i see no option to do it for just one system, i see its in the menu part and then where it says settings and then P 25 ajustment, does anyone know if this can be done with just one system ? and also does anyone have the other values of the settings, such as 200 being 8 and so on ?
