A quick question from a beginner in antenna...

Suppose that I'm installing an omnidirectional antenna for both transmission & reception purpose at the elevation of ≈100ft. If I want to effectively communicate with a few targets all at the elevation of ≈0ft and horizontally ≈5100ft from the antenna, what's the maximum acceptable gain for this antenna?

Even high gain will have some various lobes that will give you pretty good coverage around the antenna.

More will depend on the surrounding topology.

Oh Thanks! I'm just wondering about the actual "size" of the lobes. Does it mean that in my case, the 100ft difference in elevation is negligible for most of common 2/3/6 dBi... omni antennas?

It would depend on the exact antenna. Some base antennas will have 'downtilt' built into them. This is part of the design that brings the main radiation lobe down below the horizon.

In reality, 100' isn't likely even going to notice. If you were up several thousand feet, then it's something to consider.
