what type of scanner to you have? depending on what type you have depends on if you can listen to them or not. not sure how familiar you are with scanning and scanners, but in order to follow the police... you need a trunktraker

some examples are rs 94, 95, 96... or BC 250, 296, 246T

let me know what your using... then i can help you out some more.

Since the system is a Motorola Type 2, there's no real difficulty in getting this done. See pp39 thru 41 in your owner's manual. The explanation there is good enough to get you going. Do you have one? If not, there are a couple of places - including the 245 Yahoo group, I think, where you can download one.

I live in the Glen Burnie area and can easily get you going if you are totally lost. I have several software packages that work just fine with the 245, and can easily slap a file together for you.

These are not frequencies. They are talkgroups. Northern's talkgroup is 1616. The 57872 is the talkgroup from the old system before they changed it last year. You've got to program all the frequencies for the AA County system into your scanner and then, in the appropriate place, enter the talkgroups that you want to hear. You should be able to hear the entire county if you're in or near the county. I know when you first are exposed to trunking, it's difficult to understand the relationship between freqs and talkgroups. The section in your manual about Motorola trunking should start to explain it.

Okay, raceman, you've made a start. As Mike mentioned above, he's near you and has suggested he's got a file for you. Keep reading and wait till he pops back on here and he can probably give you that file to download into your scanner that will do it all for you. I don't have a 245 or I'd give you mine.

OK, I'm assuming here that you've entered all the frequencies and are seeing IDs such as 16, 2096, 1616, 1744...these are all common talkgroups on the AA system. The book that comes with the 245 is not correct, as AA made a huge set of changes last year. Use the list that is provided on this site.

You are in what is known as trunk search mode. If you are indeed seeing these IDs, simply press manual. Your display should blank out and look something like this;

---------

You are now in a scan list programming mode. Enter the first talkgroup, then hit the up arrow (if you made a mistake while entering talkgroups, you can also use the down arrow to go backwards). Keep doing this until you have all the desired talkgroups programmed. This procedure is described on pp48 and 49 of the owner's manual.

Once you're done, you should be able to hit 'scan'. You will then see the word "SCAN' scrolling across the screen, and will stop only when it encounters one of the talkgroups you have programmed. You are now in Trunk Scan mode.

If you like I can easily bop over one evening with my laptop and I can upload talkgroups and such for you. Be specific about what you are interested in; also what other services and agencies you might have some interest. I'll develop the frequencies and scan lists as needed.

Please email me privately; we'll work out the details. Don't use the facility here, as I changed ISPs recently and emailing me from here will not work. Use ka3jjz@netscape.com

Feel free to do the same thing with the Baltimore Co. system You should be able to pick it up from your location as well. Other similar systems are the Carrol Co. system and the Frederick Co system. Unless you have a really go antenna you won't be able to pick them up from your location.

Alot of the other surrounding Jurisdictions (Baltimore City and Howard Co. work on similar systems but use digital transmissions. The 245 won't pick this up.

Good luck with your new found interest. It'll lead to years of fun (and addiction :) )
